Conversations with The Loc Genie

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Loc Genie.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From as early as six years old, I’ve been captivated by the beauty and power of locs. I remember staring at my father’s locs—mesmerized by how regal, strong, and expressive they were. In that moment, I knew I needed them too. Even as a child, I didn’t just see locs as a hairstyle—they were art. They were identity. They were freedom.

My mother granted that wish and loc’d my hair, marking the beginning of a journey that would shape my confidence, creativity, and connection to culture. That simple yet powerful act planted a seed in me that would later blossom into a lifelong passion for locs and the people who wear them.

Growing up, I never allowed society’s narrow standards to dim my glow. I wore my locs boldly and unapologetically, always with the belief that if girls with straight or curly hair could do it, I could too—and with locs! Whether it was high-fashion styling, creative expression, or just showing up authentically, I’ve always seen locs as limitless.

That mindset became the foundation of my journey as the Loc Genie. I wanted to create a space where others could feel that same joy, pride, and liberation I’ve always felt. A place where people could not only embrace the crown they were born with but also reimagine it, honor it, and fall in love with it again—especially if that love had been lost.

Now, six years into this magical ride, I’m blessed to say that I wake up every day doing what I love. Every client who sits in my chair is a reminder of why I started: to celebrate the beauty, strength, and creativity of locs, and to make sure no one ever feels like they have to shrink in order to fit in.

This is more than hair—it’s healing, heritage, and a whole vibe. And I’m just getting started.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, I faced some real challenges—especially during the pandemic. COVID shook everything. Appointments were canceled, income was uncertain, and like so many others, I had to adapt quickly just to stay afloat. That time tested not just my business, but my resilience.

On top of that, I’m a mother and a wife, so balancing my household, my clients, and my own dreams hasn’t always been easy. There were days I had to work with a baby on my hip, nights I was up late planning styles or answering messages after everyone else was asleep. There were moments of exhaustion and even guilt—wondering if I was doing enough in each of my roles.

But through it all, I stayed grounded in my purpose. I knew I wasn’t just doing hair—I was building something meaningful, for my family and my community. Every struggle taught me to give myself grace and to keep showing up, even when the road felt heavy. And looking back now, I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a loctician and the heart behind my business, where I specialize in loc maintenance, styling, and overall loc health. I work with clients at every stage of their journey—from starter locs to full transformations—but I’m especially known for my signature loc petal styles and edgy, statement-making looks. I love taking a client’s vision and turning it into something bold, beautiful, and unique to them.

My approach combines creativity with care. While I love to style, I never compromise the health of the hair. I educate my clients on how to care for their locs between appointments, and I make sure every style not only turns heads but protects their crown.

What sets me apart is that I’m truly invested in the full experience. My clients come to me not just for a style, but for a vibe—whether it’s confidence, creativity, or just a safe space to be themselves. I’ve had people tell me they’ve fallen in love with their hair again because of my work, and that’s what I’m most proud of.

Any big plans?
I have some exciting plans for the future! I’m currently focused on expanding my brand beyond the chair by offering more education and resources for those who want to learn about loc care—whether they’re clients, parents, or aspiring locticians. I recently created a beginner-friendly guide and I’m working on launching hands-on bootcamps to teach healthy techniques and build confidence in caring for locs at home.

Long-term, I see myself opening a full-service salon that caters specifically to locs and natural hair—a creative and welcoming space where both beauty and community thrive. I’m also exploring product development, because I know how hard it can be to find quality, loc-friendly products that actually work.

I’m really excited about what’s next. My goal is always to uplift and educate while continuing to create beautiful, healthy styles. The journey is just beginning!
