Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Eggert
Tim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was the kid who was always drawing and would choose Art class over any other subject. My childhood was in the 80s and 90s so I was surrounded by a lot of music videos, comic books, basketball cards, and Batman cartoons. There were many visual influences which made me want to draw for a living. Growing up while Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and MGM Studios were opening, it was kind of a magical time for a kid. It was like watching amazing things grow in my backyard.
I chose to become a graphic designer in high school while looking at a list of majors. I’m not even sure I knew 100% what it was but I stuck with it and studied it at UCF. After graduating I moved to New York City and eventually seeing endless amounts of concerts, plays, and museums was incredibly inspiring.
Upon returning to Orlando I got into editorial illustration and illustration in general. I met my wife who has always encouraged me to go after opportunities even if there was little pay. Now I have a son who draws all of the time and he’s into things that I was into: Spiderman, Ninja Turtles, Pixar movies.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am where I am today because I love creating art and have never stopped. A recent challenge is being in my 40s and learning I have ADHD. I am now realizing I have a Ferrari brain and go-kart brakes. The good news is I have never struggled to find ideas and I’ve never had ‘creative block.’ The bad news is I have some unfinished personal pieces or pieces that are done and I feel aren’t ‘good enough.’
My success seems to come in waves. I either have no projects I am working on or 5. While I am constantly creating, the client works usually comes from word of mouth or someone seeing something and wondering if I can work on their project.
My biggest challenge is getting my name out there. I have a ton of artwork that no one has seen. I think posting work online is tough because either 15 people like it or I’m afraid to post it because I’m worried it’s not perfect. I need to get into a rhythm of finishing something and putting it out there and not fretting over what people think.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a graphic designer and illustrator- I can be hired to create logos, branding, or to create illustrations or paint murals. I specialize in editorial Illustrations for magazines, book covers, posters for sports teams and I just love creating bright, colorful artwork. I’m proud of designing the flag for the City of Orlando, painting a mural for Audubon Park behind Redlight Redlight and also the posters I have created for the Orlando Magic, Portland Trailblazers as well as for Nike. I think what sets me apart is my attention to detail and my clean style which is inspired partially by Art Deco and vintage artwork.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is interesting- I’m not sure if I have had a ‘big break’ (but I think it’s coming). A lot of my success is from word of mouth. A time I got lucky is when my design was picked to be the Orlando’s flag. There were thousands of submissions and it easily could not have gone to me- that felt like luck. Other times I create something, someone sees it and then it leads to something else. Success definitely comes in waves for me. Experience allows me to be ready to ride the wave.
