Today we’d like to introduce you to Torlef Borsting.
Hi Torlef, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The pinnacle singers came together after discovering our common love of community and creating through our various artistic backgrounds. As a classical trained and successful opera singer, I found myself immersed in an entirely new world of collaboration with a group of artists who pushed each other to create new ways to communicate through song. We were also neighbors which helped us to always stay in touch with each other literally and because we had all ended up here from other places, allowed us to take our different viewpoints and apply them to a common goal. The Pinnacle Singers has helped each of us individually achieve goals in our own way while also becoming a very important new voice in our central Florida arts community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggle is always about making sure that all voices at the table are heard. Each of us has a perspective about the direction we should travel and I think we have done an admirable job of staying open to each opinion. The arts are so fulfilling but there is the element of any pursuit becoming a “job”. Sometimes the discipline necessary is hard to muster.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I come from an instrumental background and fell backward into Opera Singing. I am so thankful that I found my way into it because using my voice has enabled me to learn more about myself. I am very proud to have been a working singer for about 20 years and very recently have become a
Development Director for First Coast Opera in St Augustine. The job has allowed me to give back to an industry that has given me so much and also support singers who are at the beginning of what can be a very rewarding career.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I feel incredibly fortunate to do what I do and often present as very confident and self assured. The truth is I am incredibly shy by nature, don’t like to draw attention to myself, and somewhat claustrophobic. Seems like whacky combination for someone who literally has to go against their instincts just to do their job,
