Conversations with Tylia L. Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tylia L. Flores.

Tylia L. Flores

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The Story of a Determined Author

I was born with a condition called spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy. When I was born, the doctor told my parents that I would never be able to walk, I would never be able to talk, and I would never be able to live my life as a normal human being. However, fast-forward 20 years later, almost 29 years old, and I am an Amazon best-selling author in the category of Disability and teen fiction.

My journey as an author started as a way to help me cope with a huge loss in my life. Writing became my escape from reality, a place where I could express my emotions and feelings. It was during this time that I realized that I had a knack for storytelling.

It all started with the publication of my book, “James Ticking Time Bomb.” I wrote it when I was just 16 years old, and it became an instant success. The positive response from readers inspired me to continue writing.

Over the years, I have published more books, exploring different genres such as fiction, nonfiction, historical fiction, and even romance novels. My ultimate goal is to spread a message to literature that, despite any disabilities or challenges we may face, we are the authors of our own life.

I believe that each and every one of us is a protagonist, and our story isn’t a sad one. We have the power to overcome obstacles and achieve our dreams. Through our stories, we can inspire others to believe in themselves and their abilities.

So, if you ever wondered what inspired me to become an author, the answer is simple: it was never about proving anyone wrong or proving my capabilities. Writing has become my passion, and I am honored to share my stories with the world.

my previous document, I shared my journey as an author. However, it is important to note that I am more than just a writer. I am a dedicated volunteer in the field of mental healthcare, offering counseling services specifically to those with disabilities. Additionally, I am actively involved in volunteer work with the American Red Cross, where I provide support to military veterans and their loved ones. Furthermore, I have obtained my field ministry license through the Christian Leaders Institute, which has allowed me to embark on a new path as a spiritual leader. Lastly, I have my own radio show called Ty’s Country Rewind, where I showcase my love for country music from the 90s.

My Role as a Volunteer Mental Healthcare Counselor:

In addition to being an author, I have also been actively involved in providing mental healthcare counseling services as a volunteer. I believe that everyone deserves support and access to resources, especially those with disabilities who may be facing additional challenges due to mental health conditions. By offering my expertise as a mental healthcare counselor, I aim to create a safe and supportive space for individuals to express themselves and seek help.

Volunteering with the American Red Cross:

As a volunteer with the American Red Cross, I am committed to making a difference in the lives of military veterans and their loved ones. I have the privilege of working alongside compassionate individuals who share the same desire to serve those who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. Together, we organize various programs and provide essential services, such as emotional support, financial assistance, and disaster relief.

Obtaining My Field Ministry License:

Obtaining my field ministry license through the Christian Leaders Institute has been a significant milestone in my journey. This certification has allowed me to embrace my calling as a spiritual leader and guide others on their spiritual journey. Through my ministry work, I aim to be an example for those who aspire to enter the field of ministry. I want to show them that regardless of their background or circumstances, God makes no mistakes when he writes their stories.

My Own Radio Show:

In addition to my volunteer work, I have my own radio show called Ty’s Country Rewind. It is my passion project, where I get to jam out to my favorite genre of country music from the 90s. This radio show allows me to connect with fellow music lovers, share my passion for music, and provide a platform for talented artists. It is an extension of who I am, allowing me to express myself and share my love for country music with others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey of life is not always a smooth one, and some of us face numerous challenges along the way. In my case, the road was indeed filled with its fair share of struggles. However, these challenges have shaped me into the person I am today and have fueled my passion for creativity and advocacy.

One of the significant struggles I faced was the lack of representation in society. Growing up with a disability, I often felt like an outsider, struggling to find people who looked like me or understood what I was going through. This lack of representation made me feel isolated and disconnected from the world around me.

To overcome this struggle, I became determined to use my voice and creativity to make a difference. I started volunteering and became a field minister, dedicating my time and effort to creating an inclusive environment for others with disabilities. By becoming a storyteller and an advocate for change, I wanted to inspire others to overcome their own struggles and provide them with a platform to express themselves.

Another struggle I encountered was the judgment and stereotypes that often surround individuals like me. Society tends to categorize people based on their disabilities, which can lead to a lack of understanding and empathy. This judgment made me feel excluded and undervalued, and it fueled my desire to challenge societal norms and advocate for inclusivity.

To overcome this struggle, I focused on building strong relationships with others who had faced similar challenges. By connecting with others who understood my lived experiences, I found strength and support in our shared experiences. Together, we could challenge stereotypes and promote understanding and compassion.

In conclusion, while the road may not have been entirely smooth, the struggles I encountered along the way have shaped me into the woman I am today. They have fueled my passion for storytelling and advocacy, allowing me to create an inclusive world for others with disabilities. It is through these challenges that I am committed to breaking barriers and advocating for a society that embraces diversity in all its forms.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
When it comes to my work, I specialize in creative writing and teaching others how to effectively represent characters with disabilities in their own stories. I believe that it is crucial for individuals with disabilities to have their stories heard and represented authentically. My ultimate goal is to provide a platform for individuals to express their experiences, challenges, and triumphs in a powerful and relatable manner.

What I specialize in is guiding writers through the process of crafting compelling narratives that accurately capture the nuances of characters with disabilities. By delving into personal experiences, research, and empathy, I help writers develop a deep understanding of the characters they write about, ensuring that their portrayals are not only authentic but also engaging and thought-provoking.

I am also known for my ability to help writers tell their story in the rawest way possible. I encourage writers to embrace their unique perspectives and express themselves authentically, even if it means delving into uncomfortable or challenging subjects. I believe that by embracing vulnerability and truth, writers can create stories that have a lasting impact on both readers and society as a whole.

In terms of what I am most proud of, I would have to say that it is my ability to give those with disabilities the representation they deserve. Through my work, I strive to create characters that are not only relatable but also inspiring and empowering. By shining a spotlight on the experiences of individuals with disabilities, I hope to challenge societal stereotypes and break down barriers that hinder their full inclusion in society.

What sets me apart from others is my dedication to authenticity and empathy. I am constantly seeking to deepen my understanding of disabilities and the experiences of individuals with them. This dedication allows me to provide valuable insights and guidance, ensuring that writers create representations that are both accurate and sensitive.

Ultimately, my goal is to empower individuals with disabilities to tell their own stories, in their own voices. I believe that everyone has a story to tell, and I want to ensure that those stories are heard, respected, and celebrated. By specializing in creative writing and disability representation, I am committed to making a difference in the lives of those with disabilities and creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all of us.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
1. Write Consistently: Becoming a writer requires a commitment to writing regularly. Set aside time each day or week to dedicate to writing and keep it consistent. Write without editing or worrying about the quality of what you produce at first. Just let the words flow.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of Bad Drafts: Every writer has to start somewhere, and your first drafts are often not going to be perfect. Embrace the messiness of first drafts and see it as part of the process. Use feedback and editing to refine your work.

3. Take Your Time: Publishing a book should be a goal, but don’t rush the process. Allow yourself to develop as a writer and gain valuable experience along the way. Publishing too soon can lead to mistakes that may not be easily corrected.

4. Use Real-Life Experiences: Ernest Hemingway once said that when writing a story, you’re not developing a character; you’re developing a human being. Take inspiration from your own experiences and incorporate them into your writing. Real-life experiences add depth and authenticity to your characters.

5. Avoid Social Media: While social media can be a valuable tool for networking and promotion, it also carries risks. Be mindful of what you post on social media, as it can come back to haunt you. One misstep can lead to a loss of credibility and support. Avoid sharing controversial or divisive opinions.

Remember, becoming a writer is a journey that requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to learn. Embrace the challenges, learn from your mistakes, and keep writing. Good luck!
