Conversations with Ursula Schwartz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ursula Schwartz.

Hi Ursula, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

Art has been a core part of my existence since my early childhood. It’s in my DNA. Drawing, painting, sculpting, and creating comes naturally to me. I am self-taught and my childhood, grounded in the inspiring environment of South Africa, certainly helped to curate my gift.
Also, as an only child, I had plenty of time in my own space where I could create a magical, imaginary world by drawing, painting and exploring. And, because I encountered and had to overcome many personal and heartfelt obstacles, the gift of creating art, propelled me from living a merely surviving life to completely thriving. In certain respects, art was my savior.
As I’ve evolved over the past few decades, so have my creative energies and direction of my thoughts. I’ve become more emboldened to explore multiple mediums with expressions of passion, empowerment, and vulnerability. My art is now typically described as rich, provocative and empowering in an ecstatic way. That reflects the evolutionary transformation I believe I’ve encountered.
My studio is in downtown Winter Park and I love my creative space. It’s the perfect venue when I need privacy and need to create, and find a place to display my work to others when the time is right. I like showing my art in the space where it’s created.
I’m working on many new and exciting things that I’m looking forward to share with  everyone!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

Life’s challenges have taught me that I can overcome fear and uncertainty by remaining true to myself, trusting my inner voice and seeking validation through art.
I have learned to embrace who I am, my history and unique perspective. The self confidence I’ve developed is empowering and fuels my creativity. I am determined to live life by my own rules,
When people enter my studio for the first time, they are very surprised by the vibrancy and energy portrayed through my art. If they’ve met me outside my studio, I think they can even see how my energy level is heightened when I’m in my studio. Some say that my art and I are the best-kept secrets!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

To me, art is the alchemical expression of a message through beauty. It has the ability to transform opinions, create new emotions, and infuse unique understandings about ourselves and the people around us. My work is incredibly  diverse. I paint abstract paintings, figures, and faces – and some of those works are more intense pieces, conveying raw emotion. I also create sculptures, mainly figures, large and small.
My JUST B THAT series, which I’m so proud of, is magical. Fun, colorful pop art. It is easy to understand and a reminder for people to let go, be in the moment and constantly relive life as if they were still children, playing, carefree and making whatever we imagine real. This series is all about inspiring a happy and emotionally healthy lifestyle. JUST B THAT offers original paintings, paper and giclee prints.
But art isn’t just for the wall. We also offer printed inspirations products—like beach and yoga towels, crown pins, pet bandanas and greeting cards—that can be used in daily life and should serve as a daily source of inspiration.
The CROWNS OF POWER are a small series of artworks with a lot of detail. They intentionally give you the confidence to be your unique self. Art with a message, reminding each of us that in our own way, we are sparkling gems! Every Crown has its own powerful message printed on a beautiful card.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?

I was more of a a tomboy and loved to be outdoors surrounded by nature. Strong willed, independent and very creative. Where I grew up, wild horses still roamed and there were beautiful woods and waterfalls to explore, which I loved to do. Starting an adventure into the unknown was for me!

The Bushveld, where the wild animals roam, is what I still miss and long for.  It will always be a part of me. There’s just something about Africa that will always be a part of me, inspires me, and makes me feel magical.
