Conversations with Villains and Virtues

Today we’d like to introduce you to Villains and Virtues. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Villains and Virtues was started with the mentality that the members should not only be bandmates but also friends and hang out outside of the music. This makes the group more close-knit and the resulting music more exciting to write, perform, and listen to. After three years of searching, guitarist Oniel met bass player Jekyl through an online ad on Craigslist. After connecting personally over several months, they decided to continue to work together as Villains and Virtues with original drummer David Cardona. Once an instrumental group, the search for a vocalist began. Ruling out no one and no personal style, auditions went on for months until Krysta smashed her audition with fully prepared lyrics and melodies, which no other auditioner had done. Finally complete, Villains and Virtues recorded their debut single “Deliverance” and began booking live shows, with The West End Trading Company being the first in 2019. After releasing the EP “The Human Element” the same year, Villains and Virtues began performing alongside nationally and internationally touring bands coming through Orlando and other venues throughout Central Florida. Today Villains and Virtues is working on their 4th single release which is set for early 2022 release on all major digital platforms.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Drummers have been the biggest hurdle to date. Our original drummer had to step away from the band after a traffic accident made it difficult to play drums at all, let alone perform to the level he wanted. Since then, it has been difficult to find a solid player to fill the gap left by David and to put into the group as much passion as the rest of the members.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What sets Villains and Virtues apart from the rest of the bands in Orlando is the high-energy live performances that we put on each and every time we step foot on a stage. No matter if it’s 1,000 people in the audience or just a few, every person in attendance is able to leave knowing they saw a great show and not just some guys on a stage looking at their feet while playing guitar.

What were you like growing up?
As a kid, Oniel saw Metallica live in concert and that made him choose to be a musician instead of a baseball player.

Krysta’s family had a big hand in her wanting to become a singer at a young age.

Jekyl heard KISS Alive for the first time and the sound of the huge guitars and screaming fans gave him the drive to play bass.
