Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a special place in my heart for video production. Even at 10 years old, I would experiment with cool camera angles when playing basketball. The concept of recording something to watch back later had always made me curious. I always thought about how I can capture the best moments of life so they can live on.
At 13 years old, I started volunteering on a broadcast video production team. Even walking into the control room gave me chills. I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life.
I was hooked! From then on, my life consisted of two things…homework and watching back my camera shots. I was obsessed with being the best, and anything short of that wasn’t enough for me. My dream was to make a career out of the video production industry, and I was terrified about not being good enough.
At 15 years old, I started an internship with that same production team. I knew that learning the film side to production would be crucial in building a successful career. Learning the ins and outs of video was my whole life. I’ll never forget the nights I finished my work and walked out at 2 am, 12 hours of filming/editing, last one in the parking lot, hungry, tired, and overwhelmed. I knew my life ahead wasn’t going to be easy. I chose an undeniably difficult industry with a lot of completion.
I knew that all I needed was to give myself an honest shot. If it didn’t work out then I’d have to live with that. The best way to give myself a chance? Simply outwork all of my peers. So that’s exactly what I did, and more importantly, I enjoyed the process.
At 18 years old, I was in my second semester of college pursuing an engineering degree. Video production was my backup option, but one text message changed my life. January 24th, 2021…I got offered 3-month long camera gig. It was a low-pay entry-level position. The “smart” option would be to turn it down and stay in college. After all, much more money would be made in the long run, right?
Well, I was hungry for any opportunity I could get my hands on. I always wondered what happens if I go into Engineering without giving my dream an honest shot.
I skipped classes to work this gig, and guess what…it led to more opportunities. I dropped out of school completely the following semester. I never looked back. I took the opportunities offered and ran with it. I’d been doing video for 5 years at that point but taking on entry-level jobs. This allowed me to climb the ladder at an accelerated pace and impress people who could give me bigger opportunities.
Near the end of 2021, I founded Luminous Productions. I needed to level up to combat complacency. There was a part of me that needed to work on larger and more demanding projects. So, while I didn’t know anything about business, I started one. After $50,000 invested in equipment, mentors, and courses…my business is growing rapidly.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not,, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey definitely hasn’t been smooth. Especially when I first got started, there were many times I almost quit. It often felt like I was running into a brick wall. In reality, that was the testing phase to see if I had what it takes.
Murphy’s law says, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” I experienced this quite often at the start. In the learning phase, I wasn’t prepared to handle situations where everything possible falls apart. It made me question if I was cut out for this industry, but the truth is I hadn’t refined my skillset enough to handle problems with ease.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Luminous Productions specializes in commercial projects. It’s often the best way to highlight the exact thing that separates a business from the rest. Additionally, we often produce testimonials for our clients. People only want to do business with people that they trust. The truth is, the best way to build trust with potential buyers is through client testimonials.
My mission is to help businesses all over Orlando tell their story through video production. The best visuals won’t do anything without a story behind it. This sets my clients apart from other Orlando businesses. As a result, it also sets Luminous apart from the apart from the average Orlando production company.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In my opinion, mentorship is the most important action an individual can take to improve. In short, you’re paying to skip the line. Most people spend their whole life trying to become experts while surrounded by people who aren’t successful.
They say you will be the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Find the people who have what you want in life, and get them to mentor you. Some will offer it for free, and some will be quite pricy. Even the expensive mentors are well worth it.
I like to think about mentorship similarly to a Ferrari. It cost’s a lot of first but will get you to the destination a whole lot faster.
In terms of networking, I try to always keep the door open. You really never know! Some conversations I didn’t think would lead to anything actually changed my life.
