Daily Inspiration: Meet Abson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abson.

Hi Abson, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started off in the church choir when I was around 9 – 10 years old. I always had a passion for music due to my mom’s church influence and my dads more versatile approach to music. I started off singing, but when I was 11, I started dabbling in hip hop music due to watching competition shows like the X Factor USA and America’s Got Talent. From then on, I became obsessed with music and started making it the subject of every topic. When I got into high school, my love grew for it so much that decided to take on the moniker “RootsWill” and make music for myself. This was around time I was 16-17 years old. I had no direction till music came along. Released my first track when I was 17 with the help of my teacher Ms. Jackson’s studio set-up. The rest was history.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been far from smooth. I think the transition to becoming a rapper/singer-songwriter was natural due to the love I already have for the craft, but it was long road to get to the point I am now. I started rapping at 16-17 years old, so I had to grow into concept of lyricism and learn how to flow on a beat. It took me a few songs, practice, and listening to a plethora of rappers, but I finally got it. I’ve been able to sing my whole life, but I’m still not the most confident with my voice which I’m currently still working on. As far as the journey, it took a while to find producers to work with, studios to record at and it’s still a hustle. Lucky for me, I was able to establish relationships with dope producers such as Jaffé Joffer, FREEDOLO, and many more. A lot of my success with building connections and gaining fans came with performing. I’ve been performing solo since I was 13. As I continued on the scene around 2018-2019, I started performing at open mics that helped me gain more confidence and a lot more eyes on me. As of now, I’ve only gotten praise for my performance skills and the growth musically. But there’s still a long way to go.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a rapper/singer-songwriter, which is pretty self-explanatory. I mostly dabble in the genres I grew up with including R&B, gospel, and hip hop when I started getting older. I’d say I’m most proud of the overall growth in terms of my transitions from the soulful sound to more of a sound with variety. (trippy, trap, alternative) I’m also happy with the progress of my performance level, as I still continue to perform sparingly. I feel my heart and passion for music as well as my old soul poise that I carry often gives me an advantage of me being different to a lot of people. I just dropped a new project called “22’s” with production from talent like Jaffé Joffer, FREEDOLO, Edwin Mlayi, Armani. Also, it features verses/vocals from LaUni, Brittany Bae, and Len Da G. Definitely worth checking out.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would say just to be yourself and do you. It’s your vision, don’t compromise the vision for anyone. Also, I’d say study the art form and become a student of the game. At the start, I wish I was knowledgeable about music distribution and how to make from that (which is something I recommend for new artists). Keep creating and focus on the craft before anything.
