Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Schepp.
Hi Alexa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
When I was younger I would always read magazines like “Alternative Press” or “Rolling Stone” and see photos of bands I listen to. I would rip them out of the magazine and tape them to my wall just to stare at them wishing that I could create something like that. I bought a camera a year or so back and started shooting my boyfriend’s band while they played or practiced. Not long after people started booking me to shoot their shows or for portraits.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say the road was paved for me, Melbourne has very few people who come to shows and shoot. When I first started shooting it was hard to feel like I wasn’t stepping on toes. Some of the people who took photos had been taking photos for years at that point and had the routine down par. I found myself yearning to create something new and have my own style all while feeling awkward to shoot or socially scared.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I take photos of the local music scene! I wouldn’t say that I’m known for specifically one thing but I am one of the few people who do actual portraits of bands. In my mind, I think that almost every band has some sort of photo or collection of photos that they have of them playing live. Some of these bands have very few, if not any, photos of them set in a location other than a venue or recording. That’s where I step in. There’s this little abandoned warehouse I take bands to that creates the coolest photos.
I think that if anything I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve made through taking photos. Some of these people I would have never met if I didn’t shoot their band. I love being able to connect with people who are often very different than I am.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think the biggest quality that has contributed to my success is being an active part of my community. By just hanging out at shows, or going to events that are hosted in town has given me so many opportunities and the chance to meet so many people and just get my name out there. Aside from bands I’ve shot Massage Therapists, Poets, and so many awesome people who also promote a sense of community. It’s one thing to meet someone, it’s another to build a bond and share interest in something local or historic.
