Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Winters.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised here in Oviedo/Chuluota. I went to Olvido high school and during my senior year dual enrolled at Woody’s hairstyling Academy in Orlando. I graduated high school in May started UCF that summer and got my license in August. I started off doing hair with the intention of it just being a way out of sitting in high school classes all day and figured it would be a good job in college. Once I got my license I started booth renting at my best friend’s moms salon in Oviedo. I quickly had a clientele which consisted mostly of friends and family that paid my bills through my for years at UCF till I graduated. About year two in college I realized that this was some thing I wanted to do long term, I enjoyed the flexibility of being my own boss and I absolutely loved the social aspect of the salon. I have now been with the same salon since I got my license in 2007. We have grown three times to the space we are in today. I still work alongside some of the same girls I started off with and my clientele has grown to where clients have become longtime friends.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting off in A booth rental salon where we did not have walkins was a bit of a challenge. It taught me early on how to net work and advertise myself. Since being behind the chair I’ve also had two children and learned how to manage being a mom and business owner.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do all hair services from men women and children Color haircut and extensions. A lot of stylus put out beautiful work and there’s a lot of competition I think what sets myself apart from other stylist is the way I connect with my clients on a more personal level. Giving someone the gift of self confidence and being able to really understand what they’re looking for, what they’re going through, and their day-to-day life makes a huge difference. Yeah being a stylist is a very personal relationship with a client yeah definitely so being able to gain their trust and make them laugh and feel good it’s probably my strongest suit.
What does success mean to you?
Success for me is being able to put being a mom first and knowing that I’ve built a business where I’m able to pay all my bills and come to work every day with a positive outlook. So many people dread going to work and I feel exactly the opposite. Work has been my outlet through some of my darkest days and it’s also been where I’ve been able to share some of my brightest.
