Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia Yu-Robinson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Asia, and my adjectives are fierce, creative, and caring. I am a mixed Asian American woman from Raleigh, NC. My whole life, I’ve been surrounded by athletics, entrepreneurship, and mentorship. My parents met at a karate tournament in Las Vegas in 1991 and competed for Team USA until they opened a karate dojo (studio) in 2004. I started training karate at the age of 6. My younger brother and I made friends quickly with the other kids at the dojo while our parents taught and we either trained or played there until 9 pm every night. They say “it takes a village to raise a child” and the dojo is my village, my family. Traveling with Team USA was my dream; I competed with the AAU Karate national team from age 10 to 20 at an elite and international level. In my years with the team, I traveled throughout the U.S. and to 8 countries in Europe, Australia, and Asia, and won 8 World Championship Titles.
Training is in my blood, I train to win, I train to be the best. After graduating high school in 2016, I entered college at Appalachian State U. in the mountains of NC as an Olympic hopeful. But with over 15 credit hours, giving campus tours as a Student Ambassador, and teaching group fitness classes, I took a step away from training karate and focused on school.
Fast forward to the spring of 2020, I graduated from college during the Covid pandemic, but had to start a corporate sales job that was supposed to be in Dallas, TX, at my parent’s kitchen table. The cramped space, the hundreds of phone hang-ups in a day, and the isolation of the job made me miserable. Fortunately, my manager was a true mentor. She gave me cherished advice: “You have to do what makes you happy and if it’s not this job, that is okay.” At that point in my life, the only joyful thing was working out and motivating others through exercise and practicing healthy living. I quit the job, I decided to prepare for a bodybuilding show in the spring of 2021, and I committed to creating a business that brings my social media and marketing expertise, exercising, coaching, and personal commitment to a healthy and resilient lifestyle, into one. And in January of 2021, I launched my business, Wellness with Asia.
Wellness with Asia is a business that stands by making smarter and better decisions for your life while continuing to enjoy life’s little moments. As a personal trainer and wellness coach I work with my clients virtually and in-person on recentering themselves and practicing a balanced, sustainable lifestyle. I design personalized meal and workout plans for my clients that have specific weight goals or simply need to get back on track. I provide a unique way of training not only your body physically, but also your mental and emotional being as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No one’s story is perfect, including mine, it’s a roller coaster. What I didn’t mention is affordable housing is a monster for everyone right now. I was running my business out of my parents’ and grandmother’s dining room partly due to covid and partly due to the astronomical price of housing. I was doing everything I could to get clients while training for a bodybuilding competition, which really meant trying to function on minimal calories and sleep. So many times, I’d cry to my mom, asking her if quitting my job was the right decision or if my business was going to take off, if I was actually going to make money, or if people were going to hire me to be their coach. And being over a year and a half of running Wellness with Asia completely by myself, I think I’m doing okay. Not every day is going to be perfect and I’ve learned to trust myself and tell myself everything happens for a reason. And although I run my business by myself, I couldn’t have done it without my village and the people who helped me along the way.
