Daily Inspiration: Meet Brenna Burkhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenna Burkhead.

Hi Brenna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After decades devoted to educational leadership, I found myself entering a season of personal change. For years, my focus had been guiding students, teachers, and families. Suddenly, I was the one needing guidance, searching for direction within my own life.

During that time, feathers began appearing along my path. At first, I noticed them casually. Then they seemed to show up everywhere — in parking lots, along daily walks, even on family trips. What once felt coincidental began to feel meaningful. In a period when I was seeking reassurance and clarity, these delicate discoveries felt like gentle reminders to remain open and hopeful.

Curious about their symbolism, I began researching their meaning and learned that feathers are often associated with messages of guidance, peace, love, and renewal. Each discovery felt like quiet encouragement for the road ahead. As my interest deepened, I also learned that possessing most migratory bird feathers is prohibited by law. Many resources suggested honoring their beauty by photographing them instead. That redirection felt significant, like an invitation to create.

Rather than collecting the feathers themselves, I began capturing their presence through my lens. What started as a simple creative exploration quickly evolved into something more intentional. Through photography, I found a way to preserve, not just the image of a feather, but the feeling it evoked in me, lightness, resilience, and hope.

From this journey, Feather Fotos by Brenna was born. What began as a hobby became a heartfelt passion. I had discovered my way to transform moments of uncertainty into art that speaks of peace and possibility. Through each photograph, I hope to pass on the same gentle reassurance that once found me. My desire is to share that, even in seasons of change, beauty continues to cross our path, guiding us forward.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like many meaningful transitions, my journey has not been without its challenges. Shifting from a structured career in educational leadership to building a creative identity required both vulnerability and courage. Stepping into the art world later in life meant embracing uncertainty, learning new systems, and allowing myself to grow in unfamiliar ways.

At the same time, I have navigated personal physical obstacles that required patience and resilience. These hurdles slowed me down in unexpected ways, but they also deepened my perspective. In many respects, they strengthened my appreciation for stillness, promoting a quality that now defines my work.

Rather than viewing these challenges as setbacks, I have come to see them as refinement. They have shaped my artistic voice and polished my understanding of grace under pressure. Each obstacle has reinforced the importance of perseverance, faith in the process, and the belief that growth often unfolds quietly.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Feather Fotos by Brenna is centered on simplicity, symbolism, and stillness. My work focuses on feathers discovered in everyday spaces, objects that are often overlooked yet filled with delicate texture and quiet strength. By isolating each feather within open space, I invite viewers to pause and truly see the intricate detail and resilience held within something so light.

In photography, the editing process is as important to the final image as the composition itself. While the camera captures the initial moment, it is through thoughtful refinement that the full presence of the piece emerges. I am naturally drawn to black and white, as removing color allows the lines, curves, and structure of each feather to speak with clarity and depth. The simplicity creates room for reflection and encourages a slower, more contemplative experience.

As each portrait comes together, it often begins to reveal a feeling or message. Titles and accompanying words surface organically, inspired by what the image evokes within me. However, I believe the true beauty of art lies in personal interpretation. The message I receive may not be the same as the one someone else discovers. What matters most is that the viewer connects and receives something meaningful that speaks to them.
Through this process, my work has become more than a collection of images. It is an invitation to pause, to reflect, and to find quiet reassurance in unexpected places.

Any big plans?
I am mindful that, what began as a personal exploration has grown into a focused body of work centered on connection and reflection. My future plans include expanding the Feather Fotos collection, increasing exhibition opportunities, and placing meaningful fine art prints into spaces where they can inspire pause and perspective.

I hope to continue transforming fleeting discoveries into timeless reflections, offering viewers moments of stillness in a fast-moving world. Through my work, I aim to share quiet reminders of resilience, grace, and hope, allowing each piece to serve as a gentle encouragement wherever it finds a home.
