Daily Inspiration: Meet Bryan Murch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Murch.

Bryan Murch

Hi Bryan, It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us. Would you be willing to share some of your backstory with our readers?
“For the oceans. For the animals.”

Recycled Horrors by Bryan Murch was launched in 2013. Since then, this initiative has incorporated 90,396 pieces of man-made waste into artistic creations for their safety.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The early years of this medium reflect a limited understanding as to just how much plastic waste exists. At first I was only focused on discarded bottle caps. The initial pieces that I created were very limited by this shape and material. As I started incorporating more found objects (straws, utensils, beads, toys, etc.) the level of detail began to grow as the years went on. Sadly there’s never a shortage of material as I collect items from personal use, thrift stores, litter walks and am the recipient of communal donations. The one challenge I face daily is the limitation of a 24 hour day as art has to be balanced with marriage, dog care, exercise, rest, social obligations and a full-time job.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m currently employed in the hospitality industry that fuels Orlando, FL. Art is my true passion however and there will always be a dream to have my own studio that also serves the local art community through various initiatives. Obviously, I am not the only artist working in this medium. And there are so many that I draw inspiration from as well as contact to run ideas by regarding approach and technique. My subject selection is an area that I hope sets me apart as I try to select obscure but relatable creations using the horror genre and pop culture.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
There are several artists that I follow on IG that keep me inspired on a daily basis. Jason Mecier has been my biggest influence and his book, POP Trash, is a good study companion to have in our library, Currently, I’m reading Nature’s Best Hope by Douglas W. Tallamy which provides so much insight as to how we can change our current, conditioned ways of life. Earth 911 is a very informative blog encompassing all environmental conversation. I also recommend One Green Planet for new and healthy recipes – my shift to a vegetarian diet coincided with the creation of this art initiative.
