Daily Inspiration: Meet Casey Morris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Morris.

Hi Casey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I spent nearly 10 years in the corporate world working for Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Atlanta. While I enjoyed the work I did in marketing, I didn’t feel truly satisfied until I became self-employed and started supporting small businesses.

My business will be four years old next year. I’m so grateful to continue honing both my creative and technical skills while delivering results for clients. I have a very collaborative approach and often work directly with the business owners. I also get direct insight into how my work has helped grow their businesses.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not, but what good story is without conflict?

I started my business with two big accounts. Then, the first account expanded to the point where I was unable to continue supporting the newer account. Instead, I took on smaller accounts and projects to keep my plate full.

Then, unfortunately, the largest account canceled under new ownership. I had to completely rebuild my business from scratch!

While it was difficult, I often say that the cancellation was the best thing that could have happened to my business. It allowed me to expand further than before. I learned that I could handle a lot more projects than I thought I could!

Now, if a client needs to cancel, it is much easier to find another account to take their place. I also know my limitations better and can juggle a variety of contracts at once.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have the most professional experience in social media marketing (16 years) and advertising (10 years). However, I started building websites for fun when I was a teenager.

While a large part of my business is still social media marketing and advertising, my website design business has grown exponentially over the last year. Not only are my designs more affordable than those from a typical agency or web developer, but they are also fully optimized for marketing.

I start with a clean, easy-to-navigate design because I keep the user experience top of mind. It is equally important for the website to look great on desktop as it is to be mobile-responsive. I plan for potential conversion tracking from the start, whether or not I expect the client to advertise. As a value-add, I include basic SEO and analytics setup so my clients are equipped with everything they need without having to hire additional help. Website design clients can also package social media account creation at a discounted rate. That way, they start with a website that is completely ready for launch.

I have fallen back in love with web design because it gives me new opportunities to be creative. Being involved in this pivotal step in a business is also highly rewarding, as I know I am setting them up for success at the very beginning. I feel that each website design is better than the last; it’s a visual representation of how my skills have improved over the last few years. (Next up: redesigning my website that was built years ago!)

It’s funny, but sometimes when I’m designing a website, I think of what my teenage self would think about the fact that I am now doing this for a living. Then I say to myself, “She never would have believed it.”

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
It’s nearly impossible to pick just one.

However, some that come to mind are my performances over the years, especially starring in school plays or performing solos in band or choir. While I battled stage fright, I always enjoyed sharing my passions with others.

Overnight visits to Grama’s house with my sister were fun too. We would meet up with my aunt and cousin and go to the park, the zoo, or to the shopping mall with the carousel. Grama was very silly and loving, and we were always sad to say goodbye to her when it was time to go home.

Then, of course, there were the family vacations to Walt Disney World. Knowing that, it’s perhaps not surprising that I chose to move to Orlando and become an annual passholder!
