Today we’d like to introduce you to David Sepulveda.
Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was a retail manager while living in Las Vegas. Growing up in the salon industry in which my mother was a cosmetologist and beauty school instructor, I didn’t realize it was my path until I was in a salon in Vegas and saw the beauty, fashion and exciting work o saw stylists do. I decided to change my career and I went full force into the beauty industry. I worked in a few of the hotels in Vegas. I also worked in a few of the local salons. My parents retired here to Deltona, Florida and I decided to make the move and wound up her in DeLand Florida.
After about ten years here, I worked in Thorton Park for a year and just tested the waters in a few salons trying to gain all the knowledge I could from corporations to small independent salons. After this time, I was looking more into the effects the chemicals had on stylists and clients. I became aware that many of these chemicals were toxic to the human body and causing ailments to those that I regarded as family. I couldn’t put my clients in that position so I searched and found Oway. Oway is a complete professional salon luxury line. Oway is from Bologna, Italy. Grown on biodynamic farms which makes it a step above organic. The ingredients grown are used in the hair color, hair care and styling line. All made with organic and essential oil ingredients. The ingredients are what we need for our hair and scalp. Specific shampoos for different conditions. I have used so many lines and this by far is the healthiest choice for all my clients and stylists. I don’t have to worry about their health because It’s a clean and transparent line. I opened my first salon in downtown DeLand and after five years felt it was time to move where it would be easily accessible for my team and my clients. In September 2020 I opened in a plaza and have every salon department in one space. Like any other job the more hair you cut and color the better you get.
After 25 years in this business I consider myself to be a master stylist. I still learn from every haircut but I’ve done a lot of haircuts. My salon is commissioned based. I don’t rent out stations. I want the salon to work as a team and this is the only way to have it work when we are a brand salon. I only ever worked in commission based salons and found that’s how you keep every one on the same page. The move was a good move. I am the first and only non toxic salon in town and in my first year won Best Salon by Daytona News Journal in Volusia County by readers votes. The next year I won best salon in Volusia County and Best of the Best Salon in Volusia and Flagler County also by Daytona News Journal voters. Our hair color is made with organic and essential oil ingredients but still is a full professional hair color line. It does have chemicals but nothing is toxic to humans and is completely washed out. I maintain high standards for all my employees because I want our guests to be comfortable knowing the stylist has some fashion sense and the stylists hair is an example of what we do. We have so many different types of shampoos and masks made for every type of hair. We have scalp treatments using the phases of the moon to promote hair growth and strengthen it. With my years of experience and style I work to keep the passion of my work going. So I am now here at Sepulveda Holistic Hair Studio LLC wanting to get out the information that you need to be careful what you put on your head and offering the better choice for everyone! Every day we see more and more people wanting to make that switch because they are becoming aware what toxic chemicals are doing to them.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The only struggles I have had are that people think the only organic hair color is henna. Well that’s not what we are. Our hair color is not completely organic. It’s made with organic ingredients to help buffer and condition the hair which makes it feel healthier and softer. Nothing toxic and completely washes out. Our skin care is made with the same brand. So as we educate each client that comes in they realize the salon has no nasty smells because they are either scent less or smells like essential oils. So every day our struggle is less because I am noticing more people learning about toxic free salons and then finding Sepulveda Hair Studio.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a colorist and a pretty good hair cutter. I won the title for best blonde colorist in Vegas. I had a lot of show girls and cocktail waitresses in Vegas. I love cutting long hair to short pixies. I made my salon a beautiful space that showcases another one of my talents in merchandising and design. I have an eye for creating a flow which I do in my styling. I’m proud that everything has led me to wear I’m at. Everything I wanted happened as it did in coherence to the covid epidemic. People are looking now for healthier and cleaner environments which I am very particular to cleanliness. I am proud of my salon. You just have to see it. I created a brand and I think we will make an impact to everyone who visits us.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I truly believe my retail management experience of motivating a team and making them accountable for what they do and supporting them in there work. Having the experience of hiring, training, sales, merchandising and working with customers in retail have helped me with the continued growth of my business. Offering the best anyone has to offer and making it a healthier and wiser choice.
