Daily Inspiration: Meet Deejay Omobade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deejay Omobade.

Deejay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Back in 2010, I started off as an event promoter, but after working closely with DJs I began to develop an interest, it all started off as a hobby. I was mostly self-taught as I watch other people DJ, it all came naturally due to my love for music.

I officially became a DJ in 2012 when my mentor, who was also a big name in the DJ world moved out of town and there was a high demand for African/Afrobeats DJs in Orlando and Central FL. I doubled up as an event promoter and a DJ. There was a great need for African representation in the nightlife scene which was why I began my own event, AfroRythmz Fridays which ran for 5 years but shut down in 2020 due to Covid-19.

It was a much-needed space for all Africans in Orlando and Central Florida to come and enjoy great African music (mostly Afrobeats). It was like home for most people. My passion for DJ and creating events only grew from thereon. I have been fortunate to cover major events and concerts providing and introducing Afrobeats sounds to many party-goers.

There has been tremendous change and demand for Afrobeats and I’m glad to provide that too many.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been an easy road, I was in college, working full-time as well as dealing with personal issues.

With everything I had going on, I still DJ almost every weekend. It was tough at the beginning breaking into the party scene as a promoter and DJ, sometimes I might have just 5 people at my event. On several occasions, I’ve let folks get in for free just to have someone to play for.

People were not used to the Afrobeats scene but I was consistent, I worked really hard to introduce and sell the Afrobeats scene to many, especially the non-Africans.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional DJ, event creator, and promoter. I do private gigs (weddings, graduations, birthdays, etc), professional/corporate gigs, and club events. Though I’m a very versatile DJ, my area of focus is Afrobeats and African music.

I am most proud of the work I have done in the African community and bringing people together through music. I believe my versatility sets me apart, I am able to play for any occasion and setting. My music library is unlimited. I’m able to play all genres of music.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. Migrated to the US when I was 16. My favorite childhood memory is listening to music with my uncle who worked as a radio host.
