Daily Inspiration: Meet Dessie Crotchett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dessie Crotchett.

Hi Dessie , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Absolutely! Thank you so much for the opportunity to share my story — it’s been a journey of faith, discovery, and a whole lot of learning.

I come from very humble beginnings, growing up in the Philippines. I was raised by my stepmother and my biological father, separated from my biological mother at just three and a half years old. I didn’t even know her name or remember her face — just the longing of wanting to meet her someday. Life was simple, and even though we didn’t have much, I was always driven and full of ambition. In high school, I was a competitive student and often chosen to represent my grade in oratorical contests. That passion for speaking led me to dream of becoming a radio personality, a TV reporter, a journalist, and a writer. I also loved to sing and had a deep desire to become a singer… but oddly enough, photography never even crossed my mind back then!

After high school, I wanted to pursue Journalism, but my parents couldn’t afford university tuition. Instead, I went to a technical school and earned a Diploma in Information Technology. It was during college that I began to discover more about myself. I got involved in student leadership and served as both Student Body Vice President and President in consecutive years, which helped me grow in understanding others, listening to their needs, and developing a heart for serving people. I also joined the school publication, The Ping, as a writer—an experience that felt like a dream come true, giving me a glimpse into the journalism world I had always longed for.

The school I attended, Iligan Computer Institute, had a strong focus on multimedia: graphic design, web design, 2D and 3D animation, videography, and photography. Along the way, I met two incredible individuals who had a lasting impact on me—Professor Mike Maestrado, my instructor in graphic illustration, and Ross Patalinghug, our school registrar. They believed in me, knew both my frustrations and triumphs, and constantly encouraged me to do my best. I truly believe they helped shape who I am today.

It was during this time that I started becoming curious about cameras. I often watched my classmates—photographers and videographers—and admired how they captured the world and told stories through their lenses. I couldn’t afford a camera of my own, but I borrowed one whenever I could. The first time I held a DSLR, I was nervous but captivated. That moment stayed with me, even as life moved forward.

I graduated in college with honors and, I still didn’t have a camera — but I held onto that quiet passion. Then, a week later, something miraculous happened: I got a call from my biological mother. After more than a decade apart, we reconnected and I was given the opportunity to move to the United States. I not only met my mother in person, but also gained a new family — a loving stepfather and younger sister. Most importantly, I came to know the Lord, and that changed everything. I matured, grew in gratitude, and started to understand the purpose behind each part of my journey.

Photography still wasn’t on my radar professionally, but I made it my goal to buy my first camera. While working at a restaurant in New Jersey, I saved every penny until I could buy one. My little sister became my first model, and I started offering photography at church. My stepdad noticed and told me, “You have an eye for this.” Even then, it still felt like just a hobby.

Life took me in different directions — I explored makeup artistry, worked in management, and even felt stuck at times. I knew I was capable of more, but stepping out into something new in America coming from the Philippines felt scary. I eventually met my husband, Brandon, online. I saw his profile photo holding a camera—he was working as a camera operator at his church—and when I found out he was a broadcasting student, I became even more interested because of the things we had in common. Things moved quickly for both of us. Seven months after we met online, he visited me in New Jersey to meet my family and officially asked me to be his girlfriend. Shortly after, I visited Florida, where he proposed. We got engaged and were married in 2018.

Brandon was getting amazing opportunities in sports broadcasting, and while I was incredibly proud of him, I also felt stuck. I did some deep soul-searching and realized I’ve always loved caring for people, serving, and expressing creativity. I went back to school for Graphic Design at Wilmington University—and I loved it, especially color theory, typography and web design. But photography? That part of me was still waiting in the background.

Then one Christmas, Brandon asked me what I wanted as a gift. At first, I joked about asking for a fancy ring—but something in me said, “No, ask for something that can be useful.” So instead, I asked for a camera. He was shocked, because he didn’t realize how much I’m into photography. But without hesitation, he believed in me and bought me my first mirrorless camera.

That moment reignited everything. I studied hard, practiced constantly, and networked with other photographers. Not long after, I booked my first paid session — a proposal for a couple visiting from Costa Rica. I was so nervous but poured my heart into it, from the flowers to the décor. They were so happy, and I realized this was what I was meant to do — to create experiences and capture moments that people will treasure forever.

Since then, doors have opened. I’ve had the honor of photographing proposals, weddings, portraits, and so much more—even traveling for my work. In 2023, I officially launched Brandess Media LLC. By 2024, I had photographed more weddings than ever before. Recently, I accepted the role of lead photographer for three different companies—an opportunity that allows me to expand my reach, continue doing what I love, and still manage my own business. It hasn’t been easy, but the joy I feel doing what I love continues to grow each day.

I’ve experienced many roles and seasons in life, but I truly believe it’s only by God’s grace that I’ve been able to navigate each one with a “can-do” spirit. With faith, a willing heart, and His guidance, so much becomes possible.

Photography was never part of the plan — but I believe God planted it in my heart at just the right time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all — I’d be lying if I said it’s been a smooth road. I wasn’t fully prepared for the challenges that came with turning my passion into a profession. There were moments when I felt completely out of place, especially being surrounded by incredibly talented photographers who had been in the industry for years. Imposter syndrome crept in more times than I can count.

I was so grateful to be gaining exposure and building a client base. Before long, my work was finally being seen. But I never realized that growth could come with such a cost. In my case, I nearly lost my marriage. I got so caught up in trying to prove myself and keep up that I forgot to slow down and prioritize what truly matters. It was a painful wake-up call—but also one of the clearest moments I’ve seen God’s grace. He reminded me that no dream is worth losing the very people you love—the ones who stood by you, dreamed with you, and supported you along the way.

Amid that season, one comment really stuck with me—someone made me feel I wasn’t good enough, and that my husband shined more than I did. Being compared to my own husband—the person I love, support, and do life with—was heartbreaking. I believe we each have our own calling, our own pace, and our own journey. But those words left me questioning not just myself, but the heart behind them.

Instead of letting it crush me, I turned to prayer. And through that, the Lord strengthened me. He reminded me that I don’t need to compete with anyone—I just need to remain faithful. With His guidance, I chose to grow, to improve, and to let His light shine through me in His perfect timing. That’s the real victory: not proving myself to others, but becoming the woman God is shaping me to be. It hasn’t been perfect—and it never will be—but by God’s grace, we overcame that season, and our marriage grew stronger because of it. We learned to communicate more honestly, support each other more intentionally, and stay grounded in what truly matters. As our good friend Mimi once said, “Surround yourself with great people who will leave a lasting impact on your life..”

Now, I’ve learned to reach for my dreams with purpose — not to compete or race with anyone, but to serve others with authenticity and heart. I’ve learned to lean on God more deeply, to set boundaries, and to trust that He will lead me, even when the road gets bumpy. I’m no longer discouraged by criticism or comparison, because I know my calling has nothing to do with being the loudest — it’s about being faithful.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Lifestyle and Wedding Photographer based in Florida, capturing real, heartfelt moments that tell a story. Through my brand, Brandess Media, I specialize in documenting love, connection, and candid, unforgettable moments that make each session unique. What sets me apart is the heart I put into every shoot — I genuinely care about the people I photograph, and I believe that shows in the work. It’s a gift from God, and I’m honored to use it to serve others.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that might surprise people who know me through my photography is that I also work at Walt Disney World and occasionally sing the National Anthem at sports events like the Tampa Bay Rays, Detroit Tigers Spring Training, Osceola Magic, FHSAA events and more. I also sing in the choir at our church, which is one of my favorite ways to worship and stay connected to my faith. Outside of photography, I’m a content creator, graphic artist, and website designer — and I’m currently working on my debut Christian album and my second faith-based book. I do a lot, but I truly believe every gift is God-given. Behind it all is a heart that simply loves to serve people through creativity.
