Daily Inspiration: Meet Eric Pabon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Pabon.

Hi Eric, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been creating since childhood. My artistic expression was informed by comic books, films, and the unique visual culture of the 1980s. Comic books in particular had an enormous impact on my understanding of art as a method of storytelling. I picked up a pencil and tried to speak the same language as my heroes. John Romita, John Buscema, George Perez…these were some of the people who were foundational in building a world I loved to inhabit.

Today I’m lucky enough to say that despite the different roads I’ve travelled in life, I have never stopped creating. I think it is so important to have an outlet for creativity, and for me, that has taken on many different pursuits from filmmaking and podcasting to music and visual art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was lucky in that I have amazing, supportive parents who always fostered an environment which allowed me to pursue my passions. I have an incredible wife who has always encouraged and supported my endeavors, even in the toughest of times. Being an artist affords you the opportunity to meet and interact with so many people, both fellow creators and supporters of your projects. I’ve had the good fortune of learning from of my incredibly talented peers and passing that knowledge along to others.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a visual artist, I’m always striving to celebrate the things that bring me joy. If I’m a fan of something, I bring a lot of passion to my appreciation of it – and I love to express that in my work. I would classify myself as someone who specializes in bold, pop-culture-influenced work. I’m very proud to have been recognized as one of Orlando’s best visual artists by Orlando Weekly’s reader poll and to have the opportunity to work with so many amazing local fixtures in the community. I am in awe of the work being done by the Superhero Project and have been fortunate enough to work on several characters with them. I have had the chance to collaborate with A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan, Samantics, and so many other incredible local broadcasters – which eventually led me to feel confident enough to contribute as host on my own podcast, Masters of the Cinematic Universe.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I’m seeing a shift toward a more collaborative spirit. Art became a little too cut-throat, a little too competitive. You had a group of people who were generally very anti-establishment and very free-spirited acting very corporate. I think we are becoming more keenly aware of just how nasty that environment feels, and injecting a bit more of a punk rock ethos into the artistic community.
