Daily Inspiration: Meet Evan Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Howard.

Hi Evan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born on Long Island, New York and raised in Southern Florida. I’ve always wanted to be a part of the entertainment industry, ever since I was a small child. I’ve taken acting classes, both in TV and Film as well as theater acting, but I found it to be more comfortable to be behind the camera directing and editing. I’ve always had a clear path in my head of where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do, so I let that guide me through my life. I’ve won some awards for one of my short films, which helped me solidify this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I can’t say it’s always been smooth, especially when it comes to the arts. I have had internal struggles with it for years, but I’ve always come back to the sense of joy and wonder when I get to do what I love. I feel, ego plays a part when it comes to filmmaking and when things don’t go right, it can take a hit, but it’s something that you have to grow with along the way. I’ve been extremely lucky to have an amazing support system and cheering section throughout my journey which has always been comforting to know. I’m also proud of the connections I’ve made along the way, and to everyone who has helped me create my projects.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a filmmaker, I went to school to hone my craft and just recently graduated with my bachelor’s in motion graphics. I love being creative, ever since I was a child, always something to do with art or nature. I tend to gravitate more toward editing and directing over anything else because I find them to be the most rewarding in the end for me. I feel like my work is an eclectic taste of what runs through my head on a day to day basis. None of my shorts have the same tone, feel, plot or message, they just seem to be what I enjoy at that moment in time, and then I move onto the next one. Currently I’m focused on getting back into writing, editing and filmmaking. I took some time off to focus on getting my bachelor’s and now with that done and out of the way I am able to focus back on that. Within the next year I plan to have something in the can.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I love this question because I ask myself it all the time. I would tell someone who was starting out to learn as much as you can with your craft, understand how things work and how they can help you. With editing understand the basic steps of cutting, with directing, understand the meaning of shots. Most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself, whether you’re a kid or an adult trying to be a filmmaker. It’s always a learning experience. Also surround yourself with like minded people, they will help drive you forward.
