Daily Inspiration: Meet Hempmatic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hempmatic.

Hi Hempmatic, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hello everyone, My name is Wilson, but I go by Hempmatic. So I’ve been creating and making art since about 7th Grade. I started with graffiti. I would hang out with my older brother and his friends around the borough, and we would always go to the most obscene places to tag a wall or a train. He taught me much about the underground culture and how hip-hop and graffiti go together. So it became such a passion for me. I started to progress with my craft around the end of my junior year when I moved from NY to FL. I was always doodling in class, so one of my teachers referred me to the yearbook club because they needed help with putting together the pages, and by my helping them, they taught me how to use photoshop and illustrator. Knowing the software, I started curating my art and making them into clothes, canvases, or posters and showcasing many of my ideas and point of view of life in these art pieces. Around 2011, I molded my craft into a brand called @THEHEMPCLUB, simplified as THC. Its mission statement was to defy & change the stereotype of Hemp and marijuana in our culture by creating artwork or redesigning old anti-marijuana propaganda from the ’60-the ’70s as something positive and educational for all types of people to enjoy, to educate, and of course, to wear. It also brought me into the vicinity of another passion of mine; streetwear. All this culminated in where I am today. Visual/Graphic artist, Creative director, and owner of THEHEMPCLUB. I’ve worked with many influential people and created artwork, flyers, marketing ads, etc., for many of your favorite artists. But my passion always leads me back to my designs and personal art pieces; nothing beats doing something for you. People supporting and enjoying the art is just the cherry on top.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life always has a way of throwing curveballs, but what you do on your path to success defines you. I’ve had ups and downs in my life to get where I am today, but I’m never regretful. Everything that has happened is a lesson learned or a blessing. Also, having the right people in my life helped me so much in my struggles.

Please tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others.
I’m a creative director and visual and graphic artist. I do personal artwork and curate collections for my brand and other brands. What sets me apart from many other artists is the storytelling I do in my artwork. I look at it as a series of episodes under one umbrella, As well as my passion for educating people on the benefits of hemp and marijuana through my personal brand THEHEMPCLUB.

What’s next?
Right now, a couple of very talented artists in our city and I want to start working together and build a network of businesses that anyone can visit for our services. We want to be a one-stop shop for everything art, whether it be making clothes or artwork. We want to do everything in-house. In the next 5 years, I hope my brand will be in different retail locations, I also would like to open my storefront, but as of now, I want to work more on creating designs for other brands, helping up-and-coming artists find their way.
