Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Astrop.
Hi Hunter, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
What’s up! My name is Hunter Astrop. I am 23 years old from originally from Emporia, Virginia. As a kid, my parents got me into acting and modeling. I traveled all across the U.S, working and auditioning for roles. I immediately fell in love with it and before you knew it, I built a pretty nice resume on the big screen for “Law Abiding Citizen,” John Hopkins hospital commercials, “Gun Hill, “Troop 491 the Adventures of the muddy lions,” Supermodels Unlimited cover and more. Fast forward I gave acting a break towards high school to give more time to school and other extracurricular activities which led to me attending Bethune-Cookman University on a full band scholarship as well as majoring in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Broadcast production. While attending BCU I learned a lot of the behind-the-scenes of production sets and decided to get a camera to start shooting things on my own whether for class or personal use. Once I started shooting, I received a lot of great feedback from friends and family and I fell in love with the media world all over again just this time behind the camera. I just think being a former actor/model for photoshoots, commercials, movies etc. gave me an eye for the camerawork and molded me in the space that I am in now. I’ve been shooting for a little over 4 years and I’ve personally seen a lot of growth over this time period. I don’t really have a specific area of photography I specialize in because I am a well-rounded person that shoots a little of everything. However, my favorite areas of photography includes concerts, sports candids, and portraits. In the future I see myself continuing to grow and eventually get into directing and shooting films.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been smooth sailing for me, I think my biggest obstacle has been trying to get the gear needed to do what I do. To some that may not be the problem but for me personally, I love to give me clients the best quality that I possibly can and a lot of that has to do with your equipment, knowledge of your equipment, and editing skills which only gets better with time and practice. Another area I struggled with was actually finding clientele in my area. There’re a lot of good photographers and I had to find ways to standout and get my work noticed as a small business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The name of my business is Astrop World Media. We specialize in media relations such as photography, videography, and graphic design. I am most proud of my growth in this industry and I believe that the experience that I give my clients is what sets me apart from others. I love to have a good time and I love to give me clients a great experience when working with me. It tends to make my clients more comfortable and natural in front of the camera as well as build relationships with them outside of the work.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The advice I have would be to just have confidence in yourself. For me, I started out very shy and it looked like I didn’t believe in myself. You have to show your passion and from there mentors and your peers start to notice how serious you are. Confidence is key!
