Today we’d like to introduce you to IXP.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out setting up pots and pans on the kitchen floor and pretending I was a drummer when I was two years old. My mom had tons of records which I started listening to in the headphones on our old record player. I developed a taste for singing at an early age and used to watch my mom singing in the church. I started singing in elementary school chorus and the church choir up until I was about 13 years old. I have been performing in front of people both on and off the stage since I was 8. My music teacher also went to same church and was my choir instructor so I developed as a singer until my voice started to get deeper. When I got into Middle school, I joined drumline and became first bass in marching band and drum set in concert band. We were the number one marching and concert band in the nation. This is where I developed a bigger taste of hip hop music and performing. We used to play music from Aaliyah and other artists as a cadence in the drumline at drum offs and other games we played at. I started freestyling and writing lyrics. I loved Bone Thugs, Big Pun and Twista and tried to emulate them in my freestyles, with the up pace flow styles. High school, I play baseball for two years and football for part of a season. I kind of lost interest in the sports after a back and shoulder injuries and decided to pursue music full time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the ten plus years in the industry, I have dealt with a lot of issues. I have learned the hard way that not everybody you hire to help you promote and grow as an artist actually puts in the effort. After dealing with years of being mistreated by fake managers and labels, I became fully independent. When I became independent, it turned into the next speed bump having to manage promotions and campaigns by myself with my own money. I also get judged when I first get on stage at some of these hip hop clubs until the beat drops and I perform. I guess not getting taken seriously based on appearance is always going to be an issue but it comes with the territory. This is also why I put in so much time and effort to give myself an edge on the competition. I don’t let anything bother me, I continue to produce new music and grow my catalog. Now that Covid has slowed down, it has allowed me to get back to making moves to strive further in my career.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
