Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Pike.
Hi Jade, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jade Pike, and I’m the founder and Editor in Chief of the independent music and arts publication, Backward Noise. With an eclectic background in music journalism and concert photography, I found myself searching for a new outlet of expression in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has since manifested into the creation of this publication.
Backward Noise began as the result of a final project in my senior year of high school. During the creation of the magazine’s first issue, I received an overwhelming amount of support from my colleagues and mentors in the music industry. Upon graduating in 2020, I took upon the opportunity to expand the team of creatives behind Backward Noise, and the publication has since flourished into a community of eager and passionate individuals. We have since released four issues alongside our website that is consistently updated with new, refreshing content across the genres of music, art, and culture.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
As I began this project independently, there have definitely been struggles in lifting the publication off the ground. Each opportunity I have been presented with in running the publication has been a learning opportunity, and I am continuing to grow as not only an editor, but a leader each day. I have had to teach myself a variety of skills from learning new software and platforms, to working consistently to improve my craft as a designer and creative. Delegating tasks to my ever-evolving team of contributors around the nation has lifted much of the work in running the publication off of my shoulders, and I am incredibly grateful for the community around the publication that is always encouraging and uplifting.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself to be a multi-faceted creative ranging in titles from editor-in-chief to creative director and concert photographer. My craft is primarily focused in the editorial positions of Backward Noise, carefully directing and curating all of the elements that are displayed and incorporated into the magazine.
As the editor and director of Backward Noise, I truly value the input of all of the creatives on my team of contributors. I strive to assure this space is an open and accepting collaborative community to provide a platform for creatives of all backgrounds to share and publicize their work. This community that I have created surrounding my work is absolutely the thing that I am the most proud of as a creative.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Backward Noise is a completely independent and self-funded publication, and our team consists entirely of volunteers, many of which are students, that are passionate about their craft and eager to create in a space such as this.
