“When are you going to start your own business?” This is a question I often heard while growing up. They were right; I possess a great deal of creativity and excel at my craft. It’s nothing like what I initially envisioned for myself, if you catch my drift. The journey of Sugar Addiction officially began in 2017. During my college years, I was studying behavior and had a classmate who shared the same passion for dessert making. Upon discovering that she could bake cookies, we collaborated to brainstorm ideas for creating dessert sample boxes. I remember going to my local grocery store and purchasing sticker labels to create and print my business name Sugar Addiction because it’s time to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation. Even though we both enjoyed baking, we maintained our separate names for certain items that we didn’t sell together. For instance, I made Jell-O shots while she prepared coquito. To highlight a few examples, we would sell baked goods like cookies, cakes in a jar, and cup cakes through social media and word of mouth. I never anticipated reaching this point, especially after we lost contact when we relocated to different states. Remember I was in collage for psychology for myself meanwhile being pushed by my family and friends to express my creative artsy talents more. We kept in contact for a while, checking in on each other, but eventually that faded away—not due to any conflict, but rather because our busy lifestyles took over. Now, in 2024, just a month away from 2025, I can say that I’m not only focused on treats; I’ve also ventured into event planning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has certainly been bumpy, with slight challenges along the way. I would not be transparent if I said I never have challenges. Whenever I encounter obstacles, I take a break from my business to ensure it doesn’t affect my customer. Since I accept parties based on my open availability, managing them is quite straightforward. One particular challenge I’ve faced is being a independent, which forced me to intertwine my personal life with my business. If I happen to feel unwell, I won’t have the extra time to organize the event. In that case, I would need to rely on my networking friends to delegate the responsibilities. As the sole creator and main worker, I often find that there’s no one to manage my duties while I’m away from Sugar Addiction. If I had someone who could bake, create treats, and plan, I could rely on them to step in during my absence. This is where networking becomes essential—delegating tasks is vital, and most people would welcome a fantastic job opportunity.
