Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayna Brunner
Hi Jayna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started participating in Relay for Life when I was in elementary school. My moms best friend had cancer and we would go to the walks for her each year. In middle school, I got more involved with the organization through a club I was in. Then, in high school I was a part of the Relay for Life club and became the president. Here, we had our own booth at the event and raised money as a team for the American Cancer Society. Once I reached college, I knew that I wanted to be a part of Relay for Life once again. I applied to be on the Leadership Team at the University of Central Florida and was offered a position. From there, my involvement only grew. I am now the Student Director for Relay for Life at the University of Central Florida and have the pleasure of working with my team to create a fantastic event for our participants each semester.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Up until college it was a pretty smooth road as the stakes were not as high. Once I reached college, our Leadership Team was in charge of the entire event, rather than just one booth. Learning how to navigate the approvals and working with different vendors and other participants was a challenge, but with the help of my amazing team I quickly learned how to go about everything and put on an event.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently a student at the University of Central Florida studying Biology. After graduation I hope to attend Veterinary School.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t call my experiences as luck so much, as I would consider them to be opportunities I sought out. Sure, luck might play a role in what falls into place, but overall, I look for opportunities that would suit my goals. Within Relay for Life, I learned about the organization at the University of Central Florida and decided to apply. From there, you could call it luck that I was placed with amazing people on the team that are all willing to strive for a world without cancer.
