Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Ramos.
Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Back in 2018 I decided to go to cosmetology school. I finished in July 2020 and I went right into working for myself and renting a chair. And it was hard. I had no clientele and I was paying for a place to do hair and sometimes I wouldn’t have clients. I was serving as a waitress on the side and on top of being a single mom with full custody of my twins, it was hard there are times I cried lol but I kept going. I took classes. I got better at my craft. I started assisting for educators for Joico etc., and I got booked and busy and I built a successful business back home in Connecticut and then I have the brilliant idea last year to move to Florida and I’ve been here a year. I started taking clients late September of last year and now I have my suite in Oviedo and I go up north every two months to do hair because I still have a business back home in Connecticut.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been hard. I was fresh out of school and decided to go into business for myself, I chose to better my skills by taking classes, watching videos and educated myself. Had no one to help but I wanted to master my craft. At times I had no clients but still managed to make it happen and build a very successful business for myself in my home state of Connecticut for four years before I decided to come to Florida and now I’m doing it all again.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hair colorist that also does hair care, treatments and Brazilian blowout but what I specialize in and what I’m known for is foliage/lived-in color, especially blondes. I can get people very icy, platinum white. Foliage‘s is known for the dimension. I am really known for my blondes that I do the detailing in the dimension that I put in peoples hair, but also the blend of the roots into the highlights. I get a lot of compliments and a lot of people reach out asking for that. I feel like what sets me apart from other stylist is I’m not afraid to tell my clients no I will not push the Hair pass what it can go. I will go above and beyond to prevent damage to my clients hair to keep the porosity of their hair, and I also love to educate my clients on how to properly maintain their hair.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
In the beginning, I really didn’t have a mentor I went right into working for myself but eventually, I found one in hairbyNathi who is also my cousin and is a brilliant talented Hairdresser and what I appreciate most about her is she made me work for it she didn’t just do it because I’m her cousin and I had to grow my skill and I appreciated that another mentor I had is a woman by the name of Imogene she owns a salon called Alchemy, The Salon in Fairfield Connecticut. I would work there twice a week and she took my haircutting skills to the next level. I learned so much by working in that salon in the year that I was there to when I moved to Florida. now when it comes to networking, I feel like it’s all about who you surround yourself with how you carry yourself I’m a big believer and not being the smartest person in a room lol because I wanna learn so I would reach out to other stylists I would go to groups and go to meet ups. I always have business cards on me. I grew my Instagram if I can find a way to mention Hair I did it and it is just a way that I would network myself.
