Daily Inspiration: Meet Jordan Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Jones.

Hi Jordan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was always an artistic child, but would constantly hear that people don’t make money off of art, artists are usually broke and unsuccessful and tend to struggle a lot. I never believed I could be a professional artist. My high school art teacher encouraged me to look into art school, he was the first person to truly believe in my talent. I went to college to be a math teacher but after a year, decided to switch my major to Art. I graduated from UConn with a major in fine arts. After college I had a few graphic design jobs as well as jobs working with children. It wasn’t until 2 years after graduating that I started to paint. I was invited to be part of my first art show in April 2015. I completed 10 paintings in two weeks for that show and sold my biggest one. From there I began looking for more opportunities to display. That same year I had my first art event, showcasing 4 different artist including myself, with 8 local music artists performing, and 8 vendors. The event had over 100 attendees and became a yearly event until Covid cancelled it in 2020. I have displayed at events in many states including NY, MA, GA, CA, FL and CT. I frequently live paint when displaying at events. I also got into teaching paint classes, which I now do monthly. My art has allowed me to meet celebrities including 50 Cent, DJ Khaled, Gunna, and more. I also maintained a consistent clientele for graphic design, creating logos, flyers, cover art, and more. I have worked full time as an artist since 2020. In May of 2021, I moved out of CT for the first time and relocated in Orlando FL. My girlfriend was the main reason for the move. She had planned on moving when we met and her moved got delayed long enough to the point where i was comfortable moving with her. Since moving, I have been constantly seeking more opportunities and have made a name for myself in Orlando. I’ve been told by other artists that I’ve inspired them to work even harder. I have thrown multiple events and invited artists to display. I’ve created opportunities for creatives. I have been commissioned for a few murals since being here, I’ve displayed at countless events, I’ve been on the news a couple times, and many people recognize me and my artwork. I hope to continue inspiring the community here in Orlando.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing in life worth doing is easy. It hasn’t been the smoothest but I have the mindset that I’d rather be doing this and be independent, working for myself and doing what I love so any struggles that come with it aren’t too hard to handle. The hardest things are when you have a slow month and bills are due, or the anxiety of not knowing how you’re going to make money next month. Usually when it gets rough I pray, and things always get better.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I paint, draw and do graphic design. I love painting portraits and animals. I tend to focus on Black Culture, hip hop and basketball, African animals such as lions and elephants. I paint what I know and what I like. I have a realistic style. I’ve been told I have a bold style when it comes to my line work and color usage. Portraits are my specialty, I am able to capture likeness and give the feeling of the subject. I am most proud of my ability to find and create opportunities when they seem scarce. What sets me apart is my drive and my hustle. I’m always looking for the next big opportunity but always willing to take a small opportunity and make the best of it.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I don’t have a mentor but I do network. I would say to always give everyone a chance. Sometimes the most unlikely person will give you a huge opportunity. Be kind to everyone you meet and give them something to remember. For me it’s easy because my art speaks for itself. Being an introvert, it’s wasn’t always easy for me to network and meet new people, but the more I got out of my comfort zone, the easier it got. Drinks tend to help too. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, people like feeling like you’re interested in them.
