Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Graham
Josh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was a kid I used to day dream about playing drums and singing in front of large crowds. I used to make songs in my head and sing them when I’d play. When I went into middle school I completely forgot about these dreams. In high school I met some friends who were into music. Next thing you know all these memories came rushing back and I picked up the drums.
In highschool I was depressed and struggled with mental health issues. Music really saved me through those times so I’ve always wanted to make music that would help people through their hard times. I started with drums but got into production. I spent all of Covid lockdown learning how to produce. And after that I started my indie rock project Limb0. I’ve always had the intentions to start Gl1tch and make dubstep (I didn’t know about all the sub genres when the idea was born) but Gl1tch was gunna be a masked project. I was going to make collab tracks with Limb0 and Gl1tch and eventually tell everyone that I was also Gl1tch.
One fateful day at a kava bar open mic, I met someone who loved my music and wanted me to be apart of his record label. To this day i don’t really know why he invited me on because he wanted it to be a house label and I made indie rock music. But he convinced me it was a better idea to make EDM so I decided to start my Gl1tch project instead and would eventually build up my Limb0 project as a side project. Long story short I’m no longer apart of that label. I run with other collectives and have my own called source code collective.
The idea of Gl1tch was to make really trippy music that broke peoples brains. I still had that fire inside of me that wanted to make music that helped heal people. Throughout the start of Gl1tch I had a spiritual awakening and realized there were frequencies that could help heal people. I already knew some of the other ways music could help heal others. I learned more also about the other healing aspects of music like intentions and charging it with reiki. Other kinds of white magicks and psychological aspects. Now I have worked on this project and have met so many amazing people that help support me and many are also building their own things. We have created communities where we al help eachother build and it’s a beautiful place to be.
I still work a day job but I’m working hard to quit that so I can do the many things I want to do to make a living, healing the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. Music is one of the hardest industries to be in. Well art in general. We work so hard day in and day out for years to get paid next to nothing. But the work is so fulfilling and I believe it’s like this to seperate the people who are only in it for the money. And this is a challenge because working 40 hour work weeks while making music, doing tasks that need to get done to essentially run a company (marketing, emails, organizing, practicing, etc.) is very difficult. And I also do work to help run companies in the industry as well as volunteer work at festivals while still going out to events to enjoy shows and network as well as see my friends. It’s a lot to handle and not working a day job would make things so much easier. But I still love doing all of this and I’d do it for the rest of my life.
The scene is also filled with so much drama and so many terrible people. It’s hard being stabbed in the back, screwed over by people on drugs not knowing how to handle themselves, all while listening to all the gossip I didn’t ask to hear about. Being asked to take sides in things that are none of my business. Sometimes I have to take sides because what the other person did is so terrible. It can be discouraging for sure but it’s easy to get lost in this view that everyone around me is so terrible. At the end of the day there’s so many amazing people everywhere who are filled with so much love and light and those are the people I keep close.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my day job life at the moment I am a benefits coordinator. It’s like selling life insurance but legally that’s not what I do. I tell people who have license around the country about government subsidized benefit packages they are entitled to receive. It’s not what I want to make a career in but it is a fun job and helps pay the bills while I build what I really want to do with my life.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the diversity about Orlando. There’s so many people from all walks of life EVERYWHERE I go. Even in the music scene. Everyone is so welcoming to anyone (as long as you’re not a terrible person) and it’s just so inclusive. I’ve learned so much about so many different cultures. And everyone here is so nice.
I hate the fairness of this city. Compared to a place like Boston where people are mean at first, but when you get to know them they are actually really nice, Orlando can be the other way around. Especially in the entertainment industry. I get it. It’s such and personal scene but you have to be professional, which means shaking hands and smiling at people you hate just because you don’t want to burn bridges. But it goes so much deeper than that sometimes. People can seem so nice and lovely at first, but when you get close to them they become so dark and twisted, and nobody knows because they only truly open up to few people. There’s a lot of people in the music scene that are in it for the partying and the drugs too and that can make all of it so much worse. Luckily in the diversity of Orlando, there are som real genuine people around who aren’t like that and we all stick together and mind our own business while still spreading love to everyone.
