Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Richardson
Hi Julia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has always been about listening to and following my inner energy. From a young age, I’ve been guided by what lights me up, letting my passion naturally shape my path. My parents always had an artsy activity or some type of outlet for me to partake in, which I am deeply grateful for.
As an artist, I began with painting, drawing, and photography at around 16, which evolved into digital illustrations. More recently, my focus has shifted back to photography and editing, where I feel most inspired right now. I love experimenting with different creative outlets to give myself opportunities to follow what brings me the most excitement. Overall, I feel naturally drawn to capture nature, beauty in people, and fashion (mainly for all of the colors and textures involved).
I don’t always have a clear plan of where I’m heading, but that’s part of the magic. I trust that as long as I stay attuned to what energizes me in the moment, I’ll always find my way. My creative process is less about forcing a direction and more about responding to the inspirations and opportunities that naturally unfold.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road, but I’ve learned to embrace the challenges as part of the process, which make it more like a game of life for me now. This approach has led me down some unpredictable (but interesting) paths, and there have been times when I felt unsure or questioned if I was on the right track. I think every challenge is an opportunity to make lemonade out of a lemon, no matter how sweet or sour.
One of the biggest struggles has been navigating moments of uncertainty—when the excitement fades, or I’ve finished a product, it can feel a bit empty inside at times. After much trial and error, when I begin to feel that way, I have to shift my focus on my everyday joys to stay in the moment as best I can. Definitely easier said than done, but each time gets easier and easier with practice. It also helps that I have the best family, friends, and network to support me in times when I need it the most.
Despite the bumps, I wouldn’t change anything. Each struggle has deepened my understanding of what fuels my creativity and given me the confidence to keep following that energy. The uncertainty will always be there, but to survive, I have to keep moving forward. Life doesn’t stop for anybody.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
All in all, I Create. I consider myself to be fluid in different areas of expertise; photography and editing being my most offered service to others, but for myself, I express my experiences through illustrations, interior design, colors, and writing.
With my photography, I enjoy experimenting different angles and edits. The typical portrait can demonstrate the beauty and emotions of the subject, but getting into those crazy angles, using fun props, or being in a unique location, gives not just you but the model, challenges and stimulation to reach an artistic goal. Every shoot I’ve done, I consider to be a success or a learning experience.
Recently, I’ve been most proud about my writing on a subject called Human Design. I encourage everyone I know to read up on it because it’s one of the most interesting things I’ve ever learned. I haven’t posted any of my writing yet… but stay tuned.
What I believe sets me apart is my willingness to follow what excites me in the moment. I refuse to box myself into one particular medium of Art and this keeps me evolving consistently. I know in my heart that I don’t have to do things the way other people decide to do them. Riding my own wave brings me liberation and freeness to my expression- it keeps me alive.
What were you like growing up?
Ahhh, young Julia. Well, for as long as I can remember, I LOVED being around my friends and family. There was always something to do, games to play, sports practices to attend. I was a very active child, I played just about every sport until I finally landed on Volleyball as my favorite. Playing that for 4 years (all year round), taught me many things about myself. One of those being how much I loved to win. Competitiveness is something that’s in my blood, you would understand if you ever attended my family’s game nights.
My mom recently told me I was big on thinking out of the box when I was younger, because I was not a fan of authority- which still applies today. That on it’s own is creativity. Sometimes we have to push boundaries to see how far we can go in life. If I was passionate about something, I would find one way or another to have it, no matter what stood in the way.
