Daily Inspiration: Meet Leigh Witherell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leigh Witherell

Hi Leigh, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My artistic aspirations came into focus during my university years. I have a BA in English, an MA in Literature, and a Minor in Fine Art. My academic background emphasizes the literary arts, but I also discovered art as a visual conversation that I eagerly sought to dive into, realizing the plethora of stories I longed to express.

I carved my path, initially working as an instructor at a local college and dedicating time to motherhood. A relocation to Florida became a pivotal moment in my life, prompting me to slow down and reevaluate. This shift allowed me to reconnect with my artistic passions, affirming the medium of art as my true calling. But it wasn’t until we lost our oldest child, our daughter, to a car accident that I realized the depths that my art can go to. She was only 32 and never got the chance to live out any of her artistic dreams, but that realization changed me not only as an artist but also as a person. My art is evolving and growing into places in my heart and soul that I have kept hidden all my life. My art can be melancholic, sometimes dramatic and emotive, and it always has something to say. Finally, I feel I speak an authentic truth that brings my entire life together. Of course, I would give all this away to have my daughter back, but that day, April 8, 2021, can never be changed. I think she would be proud of me today, and I wish I could hear her critique of one of my paintings.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Censorship poses the most significant obstacle and challenge to promoting and exhibiting my art. I find the art world is limited in its expression and freedom. When art is censored, it restricts artists’ ability to explore and communicate diverse ideas, themes, and emotions that may challenge societal norms or authority. These restrictions stifle our innovation and prevent the public from engaging with thought-provoking works that will foster dialogue and cultural growth. Censorship often reflects the subjective values and biases of those in power, leading to a homogenization of art that fails to reflect the diversity of human experience. Moreover, it can discourage artists from pursuing bold and controversial topics, often the catalyst for social change and critical reflection. Overall, censorship in art hinders the creative process and deprives society of the full spectrum of artistic expression and the potential insights it offers.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Living as an artist who paints classic nude figures involves navigating creative and societal landscapes. As an artist, I am committed to this timeless tradition, drawing inspiration from the human form’s aesthetic and expressive qualities, aiming to capture its elegance and emotional depth. However, I face challenges regarding public perception and acceptance, as nudity in art continuously sparks conversations about decency and cultural norms. I must balance my vision and the potential for controversy, educating audiences on my work’s historical significance and artistic intent. Additionally, the commercial aspect poses its own challenges, as the market for classic nude art can be niche. Despite these hurdles, I am passionate about this genre and find fulfillment in exploring the complexities of human anatomy and emotion, hopefully contributing to a long lineage of art that celebrates the body’s inherent beauty.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Being an artist in Florida who chooses not to paint typical Florida-themed art, such as beach scenes or tropical landscapes, offers a unique and challenging path. I am naturally drawn to pushing boundaries and creating work that contrasts the state’s expected visual narratives. Many talented artists here find inspiration in Florida’s subtler, less conventional aspects—like its urban environments, diverse cultural intersections, or even abstract concepts that transcend geographic boundaries. I must forge a distinctive identity in a market that often leans towards more familiar and commercially viable art reflecting the state’s sunny allure. I look to cultivate audiences willing to explore beyond the traditional, effectively balancing my creative vision with the need to engage viewers seeking something refreshingly different. Through networking, exhibits, and digital platforms, I try to carve out a niche, contributing to a more prosperous and diverse artistic landscape in Florida.
