Daily Inspiration: Meet Lenora Ross

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lenora Ross.

Hi Lenora, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My cake decorating journey started when I was an Army wife and mother newly stationed in Germany. Being my first time away from family and friends, I needed something to keep my mind occupied. Since I was adjusting to the lifestyle change, I found myself spending a lot of time looking at cake decorating tutorials on YouTube. I quickly bought supplies and dove into teaching myself the basic skills of cake decorating. Before this, I never even piped frosting on a cupcake. Once people saw the first couple of cakes I did for my family and neighbors, I started getting orders.

When our time in Germany ended, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue cake decorating or not. I started working a full-time job and put my cake decorating tools away for over a year. After some time, I began retaking orders, but I found myself interested in creating how-to videos and putting more thought into the pictures I took. I needed to figure out where this direction was taking me. To sort out my thoughts, I started writing and reading different types of business and self-help books when I came across a book on blogging. It was perfect. I would have a place to show my cakes, write about the things that are important to me, and start building a community. I currently blog about personal growth, marriage, motherhood, and of course, cake decorating.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road when it comes to cake decorating. I had to learn how to manage my time. Making and decorating cakes can take a few days just for one cake. In the beginning, I used to bake and decorate all on the same day. This left me burnt out. However, writing out a weekly schedule and making time for breaks helped me better manage my time without feeling exhausted at the end of the day.

When it comes to blogging, the struggle I faced was building my confidence. I had to focus on myself and what makes me a better woman, wife, and mother, and the value I hold in those roles motivated me to gain my confidence. Being new to blogging, I educated myself on new skills, like building a website, email marketing, social media, content creating, improving my writing, and building a community.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for decorating cakes and making tutorials. I’ve created many kinds of cakes ranging from baby showers, birthdays and anniversaries. I’m most proud of my food replica cakes. Some of the food cakes I’ve made are Oreo Cookie Cake, Beer Mug cake, Nacho Cake (inspired by Yolanda Gampp), Valentines Candy Heart Cake, and Burger and Fries Cake (another one inspired by Yolanda Gampp). What sets me apart from others is my unique style. Heaven My Cake is about embracing who I am and using it to grow my light. Cake decorating is that sweet surprise that pushes me to dream and create.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I learned along my journey is allowing myself time to think and write. Over the last ten years, I went through different lifestyle changes. After devoting my life to my husband and child, I had to reevaluate my wants and needs. When I dedicated time to think and write my thoughts, many ideas opened in my mind I never saw before. I saw my true potential.
