Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Gilmore
Hi Mark, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story really starts with my parents. Growing up, my mom always had a 35mm or Polaroid camera in hand, capturing every family trip, birthday, or random moment that caught her eye. My dad, on the other hand, was the family videographer, lugging around a VHS camera to record everything from our road trips to Disney adventures and eventually switching to digital. That love for capturing moments got passed down to me.
Professionally, I got my start in technical project management and consulting, working on major tech installations for companies like Amazon, Walmart, and public safety agencies. Along the way, I was taking photos of vehicles, creating blueprints, and putting together documents to help train teams and make sure everything ran smoothly. This hands-on approach led me to my current role as an Account Executive, where I help cities improve their transit systems. I’m all about solving problems, building strong relationships, and making sure projects get done on time and within budget. I’ve had the chance to work with Boeing, SpaceX, Brinks Security, and Hyundai, and I’ve picked up a lot of valuable experience along the way.
But the story doesn’t stop there. With all the traveling I’ve done—over 2 million miles on the road and in the sky—I started documenting my surroundings through my camera lens. I’d photograph the places I visited, review the local food spots, hotels, and, when the days got long and the miles started to blend together, I’d pick up a paintbrush. Painting became a way to deal with being alone for weeks, sometimes months, on the road. It helped me process the time away from family, missing birthdays and important moments, and manage the waves of depression and anxiety that came with it.
That creative outlet gave me something to hold onto when everything else felt distant. It became a way to merge my technical side with something more personal and expressive, helping me find a balance between the grind of the job and staying connected to myself. Over time, this evolved into capturing public spaces and urban landscapes through photography, especially where technology and daily life intersect. For me, it’s about telling stories—whether it’s delivering a project for a client or capturing the soul of a city in a single shot. It’s been a journey of blending the technical with the creative, always aiming to bridge the gap between technology and the human experience.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
unexpected detours along the way. When you’re managing big projects for clients like Amazon, Walmart, or Boeing, the pressure is real. Tight deadlines, even tighter budgets, and a lot of eyes on you to deliver. Things go wrong—equipment fails, logistics get messy, and unexpected problems pop up out of nowhere. There were times when it felt like I was just moving from one fire to the next, figuring things out on the fly.
Then there’s the travel. Being on the road for weeks or months at a time can wear you down. You miss a lot—family birthdays, holidays, and just those little moments that matter. That isolation can get heavy, and there were definitely times when I was fighting off some serious anxiety and depression. It’s tough to stay grounded when you’re constantly on the move. That’s when I really leaned into painting and photography—they became my way to stay connected and make sense of everything going on around me.
Building relationships with clients and teams is another challenge. It’s not always easy to get everyone on the same page. I’ve had to navigate some tough conversations and push through conflicts, especially when people have different ideas of how things should go. I learned a lot about patience, listening, and finding common ground.
But every rough patch taught me something. I learned how to adapt, stay resilient, and find calm in the middle of the chaos. Whether it was solving a tricky technical issue, managing a team under pressure, or just figuring out how to take a breath and keep going, each struggle pushed me to grow. It’s been a winding road, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Those tough moments shaped how I approach my work, my relationships, and even my art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work sits at the intersection of technology and storytelling, bridging my background in public transportation solutions with my passion for photography. On the tech side, I specialize in helping cities optimize their transit systems with smart, efficient solutions that improve the way people move through urban spaces. I’m known for being able to translate complex technical needs into practical, real-world applications that make a tangible impact on daily life. It’s not just about implementing technology—it’s about understanding the pulse of a city, the challenges it faces, and how the right tools can enhance its rhythm.
What sets me apart is my dual focus on technology and visual storytelling. Through my photography, I capture the essence of public spaces and the often-overlooked beauty of urban environments. I’m always looking to tell stories that highlight the intersections between technology, infrastructure, and everyday life. My lens captures the dynamics of cities—the rush of a subway, the quiet moments at a bus stop, the way light hits a station in the early morning. This artistic side influences my work in tech, keeping me connected to the human element behind every project.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of this blend. It’s rare to find someone who brings both technical expertise and a creative perspective to the table, and that’s what makes my approach unique. For clients and cities, it means they get more than just a technical consultant—they get someone who cares about how the technology feels and functions in the real world.
I want readers to know that whether it’s a transportation project or a photograph, it’s all about telling a story that resonates. My offerings are rooted in making technology work better for people and capturing the stories that emerge from those connections. If you’re looking for someone who can both deliver a complex project and understand the art of how it fits into a larger narrative, that’s where I come in. It’s about seeing the bigger picture while never losing sight of the details that make it all come alive.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m really excited about blending my two passions—technology and photography—in new and impactful ways. On the tech front, I’m diving into smart city projects with a focus on the future of urban mobility. There’s a lot of potential to use emerging tech like AI, IoT, and data analytics to make transit systems more efficient and user-friendly. I want to be right at the cutting edge, helping cities push the limits of what’s possible and make transportation more connected and sustainable.
On the photography side, I’m working on expanding my focus to urban landscapes and the interaction between people and technology in public spaces. I’m aiming to create a series that captures the raw energy of city life—the way people move, the vibe of different places, and how technology subtly influences those moments. I’m excited to dive deeper into this narrative and bring those stories to life through my lens.
I’m also looking forward to combining these two worlds in new ways. I’m considering multimedia projects that merge visuals, data, and storytelling to create immersive experiences. It’s about showing how technology and daily life intersect in a way that’s not just visually compelling but also thought-provoking.
In terms of big changes, I’m thinking about launching a platform that merges technology with visual art. This would be a space where cities, companies, and creatives can come together to collaborate and push boundaries. The goal is to keep evolving, keep creating, and find innovative ways to connect technology, art, and human experience.
