Hi Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After many years as an entertainer and almost three decades in the Orlando theme park industry, I felt the need for a change. Although I wasn’t inclined to take risks, I had always dreamed of owning a small business. During a time of self-reflection and personal therapy, I found myself captivated by the idea of mobile food businesses. Despite not being a trained cook or a food enthusiast, I soon realized that a mobile food business might be the perfect fit for me. My interest was piqued when I discovered hot dog carts, as I recognized that I could manage this. Moreover, as a child, I had cherished memories of relishing hot dogs with loved ones and acknowledging the emotional connection that food, such as hot dogs, can evoke in people.
Following extensive research, I decided to take the plunge and acquired a small, classic-style hot dog cart, which I christened “Hot Dog Therapy”. With my cart, hot dogs, buns, and toppings in place, I secured a spot in front of a local business to kick-start my venture. I vividly remember my first day. Nervous about the proceedings, I set up my cart with just a tiny table, a plastic tablecloth from the dollar store, and some plastic containers to hold condiments. Surprisingly, the first day went remarkably well, and I sold many hot dogs. Engaging with people, enjoying their company, and witnessing their delight in my hot dogs brought me immense joy.
On one such day, a man with his two young children purchased hot dogs, and enjoyed them and the experience so much he requested my contact details, expressing his desire to recommend my “Hot Dog Therapy” business to others. A few weeks later, I unexpectedly received a call from the Community Outreach Manager for the Town of Oakland, inviting me to serve at one of their events. My food offerings, improved cart set-up and fun but professional personality was well received and led to additional opportunities with the town and eventually allowed for me to regularly set up in their downtown area.
During this period, I actively sought out various locations, businesses, events, and farmers’ markets to expand my business. As I realized this venture’s potential, I boldly decided to retire from the theme park industry and focus on growing my Hot Dog Therapy mobile food cart business. Over two years into my business, I have gained valuable experience and progress. I have upgraded to custom and themed tablecloths, accessories and signage reflecting my commitment to aligning my business with my personality and vision. My goal is to establish a classic, iconic hot dog cart that is exceptionally customer focused, fun and serves delicious hot dogs that evoke emotional connections and fond memories while creating new ones.

As I found myself at a crossroads in my career and personal well-being, “Hot Dog Therapy” emerged as a pivotal part of my journey. But what exactly is Hot Dog Therapy? It’s an experience that evokes fond memories of enjoying hot dogs with loved ones at iconic locations – be it a ball game, picnic, street corner, beach, or drive-in. Yet, at Hot Dog Therapy, the concept extends beyond the food itself. It’s about catering to our guests’ individual preferences. Whether you like your hot dog with mustard, relish and onion, sauerkraut and spicy mustard, or just ketchup, and yes, it is ok to put ketchup on a hot dog, lol. Your perfect hot dog represents your personal “Hot Dog Therapy.” Hot Dog Therapy is a savory experience that crafts your ideal hot dog and toppings to provide you with your unique form of therapy, one delicious bite at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way?
Starting my own business has been an enlightening journey, filled with challenges that have only made me more determined to succeed. The initial phase was particularly daunting as I navigated the complexities of legal requirements such as licensing, insurance, sales tax, permits, and regulations. Ensuring compliance with all the legal aspects was non-negotiable for me. The unpredictable Florida weather added unexpected hurdles to overcome. Moreover, the physical demands of the job have tested my resilience. However, each challenge has been a valuable learning experience, propelling me towards continuous improvement and growth. Through perseverance and a commitment to excellence, I have surmounted these obstacles.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Even before my time working in the theme park industry, I’ve dabbled in entertainment careers such as stand-up comedy and radio & club DJing. With the majority of my life experiences being focused on entertainment, I continue to look for ways to infuse my mobile hot dog cart and business with my blend of creativity, humor, entertainment, and authentic customer engagement that will hopefully create fond memories, just like a delicious hot dog served from a classic-style hot dog cart.
Where do you see things going in the next 5 – 10 years?
I believe the mobile food business industry will grow substantially in the next decade. Creative and outside the box food vendors are focusing more and more on engaging customers through social media and in-person events and experiences. I expect to see more creative and diverse menu offerings as well as innovative and entertaining ways to immerse customers in the mobile food experience. Overall, the industry’s future looks promising, with a strong emphasis on customer engagement, innovation, and entertainment and feel confident, Hot Dog Therapy will be part of that trend.
