Daily Inspiration: Meet Meghan Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Mitchell.

Hi Meghan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up watching Stacey London and Clinton Kelly on What Not to Wear. I still think of their most-used style tip “color, pattern, texture, shine” to this day when I get dressed. I respected their styling so much because they dressed all body types and genders so incredibly well while still allowing people to be themselves.

I would get so inspired after watching an episode and always wanted to go shopping, but shopping for clothes was a rare occurrence before I started working in high school. However, every time I had the luxury of getting a new clothing item, I would go home and see how many different outfits I could make out of it. I would spend hours alone in my room trying on every conceivable possibility. I think that’s why my style evolved to what it is today. I didn’t have tons of clothing pieces to work with when I was younger, but I realized it’s not about the number of pieces you have. It’s about the number of ways you can style your pieces.

I went from watching What Not to Wear to watching girls do clothing hauls and styling videos on YouTube. I always fantasized about being a content creator and I felt an abnormal amount of joy when someone complimented one of my outfits. I remember talking to my friend and expressing my interest and insecurities about being so passionate about fashion and wanting to create content. They were so supportive and told me to just go for it. There was a long time between that conversation and when I actually decided to pursue it seriously, but I still remember how they encouraged me so effortlessly. Around that same time, I had another friend Lauren Schoepfer start pursuing photography and I approached her with my idea to create cinematic fashion music videos. She agreed to shoot with me and brought my idea to life so beautifully time after time. The pandemic happened and while others had more leisure time, I started working more. It took me away from being able to casually produce fashion content, but it also made me realize what was truly important to me. I realized I could no longer put any more energy into a career that did not involve fashion content creation. In August 2021 I left my job as a retail manager for Target and made the commitment to pursue being a fashion content creator and share my love of street style. I still have so much to learn and a lot of room to grow, but I’m enjoying the journey every step of the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I struggled with comparison and trying to keep up with what was trending. I felt like my outfits were too weird and didn’t appeal to a mass audience. I had thoughts that I needed to dress more “normal” for people to want to follow me, but then I saw this quote a quote by the novelist Franz Kafka that says, “don’t bend; don’t water it down; don’t try to make it logical; don’t edit your own soul according to the fashion. Rather, follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.” I realized I didn’t want to change myself so that more people would like me. I realized that I wanted to be more of myself and have the right people like me more for who I really am. Having a small community of people who I can truly connect with over my unique style choices means more to me than having a mass following and not wearing outfits that I don’t truly believe in. It may seem a little dramatic to talk about clothing in this way, but fashion and personal style are things that I’m passionate about. I’m building my confidence with fashion every day. I’m still a work in progress, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Fashion Content Creator Specializing in Street Style

Known for monochromatic outfits and unique festival style

I’m proud of my ability to continuously create fresh outfits that inspire others to be more creative with their fashion choices.

I’m most proud of taking the dream that I was too afraid to tell people about and turn it into a reality.

My outfits are quirky, fun, and seemingly attainable, but not quite replicable because of my eclectic style.

Fast Fashion gets a bad rap because of how quickly it gets disposed of, but I still have pieces in my closet from college (which was 7 years ago believe it or not) that I still incorporate into my outfits to this day. I love my ability to take any piece of clothing and make an outfit that feels fresh, current, and intriguing. That being said, I tend to hold onto all of my clothing for very long periods of time. I hang dry almost all of my items to keep them looking great for years on end even if they are from Zara or Forever 21. When you truly nail down your personal style, then you won’t find yourself buying pieces that won’t be part of your closet in a year. You’ll make choices that will truly be sustainable for your wardrobe.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe in taking very calculated risks. You have to be able to bet on yourself. Being a content creator involves major risk, but it’s something I’m passionate about and my soul organically drives me to do. Knowing those two things, I can’t lose. I won’t fail because I won’t quit. My heart won’t allow it. For so long I was very risk-averse and I ended up so far away from where my heart wanted to be in life because I let my brain do all of the thinking. Sometimes you can’t let logic dictate your path in life. Logic and certainty led me to a place of being unfulfilled and depressed. Following my heart and risk led me to a place of joy and peace. Don’t get me wrong, I’m scared, but I rather be scared and fulfilled than certain and depressed. I know it sounds cliché, but if you’re not happy, then stop listening to your head and follow your heart. The risk will be worth the reward if you don’t give up.
