Today we’d like to introduce you to Merari “Suki” Cuevas.
Suki, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I started my journey, it was all about Style, I was in Houston, Texas working at a clothing store. I didn’t really care about my makeup. I grew up with boys and playing soccer so how my face was looking, was never a concern for me. Co-worker introduced me to a makeup brand and gifted me some items. -I remember that night, going home after work and playing with what she gave me as I watched a tutorial. I decided to give it a try, and everyday I was sitting in front of my restroom mirror just practicing. I then said to myself. -Suki why not go to cosmetology school? and I did! Graduated from Beauty school in April 2014.
I started doing makeup on friends, family and little by little I was starting to work on clients that I was recommended to.
I decided to move back home to Indianapolis, Indiana. Registered “Makeup by Suki” as my business.
It was all word of mouth. Business bloomed.
I was in my mother’s basement working on clients back-to-back. I want to say that withing 5 months, I was booked every day from Thursday-Sunday for different types of events. Quinceanera’s were always my favorite, it was always a sweet moment to watch them girls celebrate their special day. As time kept going… I was booked every day. I’m talking Makeup classes, Events in cosmetology schools, and clients. In 2017 I decided to start doing Live tutorials on Facebook, never thought that it was going to be such a thing. by the end of 2017, I was doing great, until I got pregnant and from there everything was just not the same. I worked so hard to get my product out, and I did! However, life took a turn and it all changed. Some say the changes were for the better, but I say there was a purpose. 2020 Covid started and I was home with 3 kids, fighting depression. With the world being on quarantine, I lost clients… I was prioritizing my kid’s health as well as mine. I was trying to find something to do that would help me get through and be there for my kids, so I started doing fashion videos, makeup tutorials and food tutorials. That’s when I knew I was a strong woman, and I knew I was doing something right when I started making money doing what I did. 2 years later I took a big step and decided to move to Florida, Orlando to be specific. It has been amazing living in here. Today I can say, I have accomplished so many things and have had the chance to work with known brands. I’m still working on growing and learning as I go, but I’m beyond grateful for the opportunities I have gotten. Being a makeup artist & social media influencer feels amazing.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There were struggles in between. A few rocks on the road that weren’t allowing me to keep moving forward with my career. I took a break after my babies were born. During covid was definitely the toughest times, no clients, no sales, no income… So, I started hustling for me and mines.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for so many titles. Radio host, Hair stylist, Sazon de suki, Makeup by suki, Dj suki, Mom & Wife. My main focus for the past 7 years has been the same. Influencing with my makeup skills, my style & lifestyle.
I create content to inspire women to experience the beauty of the world. Passionate about what I do.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
My main lesson during Covid-19 was that when you’re alone, you shouldn’t feel like you have nobody. Instead, you should prioritize yourself. That it’s okay to be alone, and you take the time to heal and show self-care. I also learned marketing as well, to make extra income.
