Today we’d like to introduce you to Sweet Shelly’s.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
Originally, Sweet Shelly’s started as a passion project based on my love for art. I got into working with pottery in high school, but shortly after starting college, I transitioned into polymer clay. I experimented with clay miniatures of my favorite desserts, where Sweet Shelly’s originated. After graduating, I began incorporating my interest in science with my love of art. I started working with different butterfly and moth specimens while researching more about insects. Sweet Shelly aims to inspire the community to learn more about science by displaying beautiful specimens mixed with handmade art for research and decorative purposes.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Luckily, it has been a relatively smooth road. Since I work full time, the primary difficulty I encounter is needing to dedicate the amount of time I would like to Sweet Shelly’s.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
My love of art stems from the inspiration of Gothic, Victorian, and Regency-era design. I use art as a form of meditation for myself. I take pride in focusing on the small details of my work and hope others will be as intrigued as I am by the beauty of nature. I specialize in creating pieces of art that can also be used for educational purposes, which can inspire the community to learn more about the natural world. Science and art are an exciting combination of my two foremost passions, and I love helping to teach whenever possible. Although I love my creative work regarding clay decorations, the work I am most proud to complete surrounds my specimens. Gothic decor, scientific research, and imaginative detail combine to make Sweet Shelly’s a unique woman-owned small business.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory sparked my interest in butterflies. I remember sitting in my backyard at the time. The sun shone, and I was lying in the grass, enjoying the breeze through our fence’s flower bushes. As I admired the flowers, a butterfly landed on a nearby bush. In the light, I could see the brilliant colors of the monarch butterfly. As I observed the beautiful orange and black colors in the wings, the butterfly flew over and landed on my finger. It stayed for a while, letting me walk around with it perched on my finger. Since then, I have been fascinated with the beauty of butterflies and felt a deep connection to them while growing up. Butterflies always brought me comfort and peace. When I began teaching science, I started exploring more field guides relating to moths and butterflies, allowing me to study native butterflies in Florida on my nature walks.
