Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Brathwaite
Hi Natasha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Black Orchid Design was born out of my passion for design and crafting. It all began when I witnessed my daughter’s struggle with eczema, as she would experience discomfort and irritation from various lotions and oils. Determined to find a solution, I embarked on creating a product that would calm her flare-ups without any burning sensation. Thus, I developed a whipped body butter that proved to be a game-changer for her sensitive skin.
The success of the body butter prompted my daughter to suggest selling it to others in need. Encouraged by her enthusiasm, I decided to take Black Orchid Design to the next level. I began participating in different farmers markets (Sanford Marketplace at Magnolia) and also established an online store. Our product range expanded to include not only butters and lotions, but also shimmer gels, shimmer oils, beard oils, eucalyptus shower steams, and even custom cups and tumblers.
This journey has been immensely rewarding so far, especially due to the support and loyalty of our returning customers. It brings us great joy to know that they appreciate our products as much as we enjoy creating them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Throughout this journey, I have encountered numerous lessons and experiences that have contributed to my personal growth. The process of creating an online store has been particularly humbling. Initially, as I ventured into the farmers market, I was unsure of what to expect and took every item I sold with a sense of uncertainty. However, I swiftly adapted and learned the art of efficient packing.
Undoubtedly, one of the highlights of being a new business owner has been the opportunity to connect with remarkable individuals. Along this path, I have met a multitude of wonderful people who have not only supported my endeavors but have also provided invaluable insights and guidance.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Sr. Analyst by day and a business owner. I have devoted thirteen years to my employer. Fortunately, my company not only promotes growth but also fosters support for employee business endeavors. Witnessing the steady growth of Black Orchid Design and the enthusiasm customers have for purchasing our products brings me immense joy.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My greatest childhood memory would have to be traveling from St.Thomas to New York. We lived in New York for part of the year and I started to study the fashion and designs. I started making uniforms and ties for my friends and family. Very quickly I started a sewing business and transformed the fashion for school uniforms.
