Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Long.
Hi Nate, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has always been part of my DNA. My dad played tuba and DJed on the side, my mom plays and taught piano, my grandpa was a longtime band director and big-band wedding performer, and my great-uncle helped shape generations of music therapists at Florida State University. So music has always surrounded me. I loved it. Some of my earliest memories are my dad making mix tapes for me on cassette — Billy Joel, Chicago, Steely Dan — while my brothers and I mock-fought to the 1812 Overture and I belted out Billy Ocean. Looking back, it was loud, joyful, and full of unbounded energy— which honestly still describes my approach today. 😂
In high school and college, I played in rock bands — everything from pop-punk to reggae rock — and started DJing around the same time. I was also on the basketball and swim teams, but the moment my first band played a tiny, objectively terrible “show” for about 20 friends, something clicked. The adrenaline rush from performing completely eclipsed anything I felt in sports. I quit everything else and leaned all the way into music. That passion shifted in college when I DJed my first wedding. Watching a couple celebrate with their closest friends and family, dancing all night and creating memories that would last forever — I was hooked. During my freshman year at FSU, I decided to started AMPLIFY.
What carried over from my rocker days was the belief that performances should be participatory, not passive. For a long time, the assumption was that if you wanted high energy, you needed a live band. I wanted to challenge that assumption and lead the charge for a new kind of DJ. DJs can — and should — bring that same sense of connection and momentum, with the added advantage of spanning every genre imaginable. One night it’s Motown and soul, the next it’s a crazy blend of hip-hop, pop, and ‘80s throwbacks. Then, and impossible combination of reggaeton, EDM, and ‘90s country. I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to DJ weddings across cultures and traditions, constantly discovering new music and amazing people along the way. That never gets old, and every single wedding I DJ is new experience and a new challenge.
Since founding AMPLIFY, I’ve DJed thousands of events, including one wedding that famously started at noon and didn’t end until 3:30 a.m. — more than 15 hours later — because no one wanted the night to stop. I measure success by how sweaty and exhausted everyone is at the end of the night, which is even more of a challenge in the winter! But honestly, it’s those moments — like getting grandma (who “never dances”) on the dance floor during Drop it Like it’s Hot, or later throwing down an epic after party for the couple’s closest friends — that mean the most to me. I live for opening the dance floor, reading a brand-new crowd, and building something unforgettable together with our clients.
I founded AMPLIFY because I believed couples deserved more than just another typical wedding playlist — they deserved a legendary night. Today, we DJ hundreds of weddings each year, driven by relentless preparation, intentional personalization, and DJs who are genuinely fun, approachable, and there to celebrate with the couple. The name choice really was very intentional, and AMPLIFY is really just an extension of the way I’ve always approached music and people since as long as I can remember: bring the energy, sweat the details, stay human, and make the moment matter. Let’s go!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any adventure worth embarking on, mine has been anything but smooth sailing, but I wouldn’t change it. I love to read the Stoics, and Marcus Aurelius put it perfectly when he wrote, “the impediment to action advances action, what stands in the way becomes the way.” How true it’s proven for me!
One of the earliest challenges was realizing that my growth as a DJ wasn’t the same as building something sustainable. I started AMPLIFY as a performer first — a musician and DJ who loved creating energy and connection. And over time I had to learn how to become a business owner. That meant marketing, building systems and processes, choosing the right skilled professionals to work with, and protecting the experience our couples trusted us with. Oversimplified, it’s about passion PLUS process. Running a business has become as fun and challenging for me as being a wedding DJ, and I absolutely love it!
As we grew, the biggest tension was scale versus soul. It’s one thing to deliver an incredible experience yourself; it’s another to ensure that same level of care, energy, and intentionality across a growing team. We were very deliberate about growth — sometimes slower than it could have been — because consistency mattered more than volume. I’ve always loved slow and steady upward growth for that reason. It’s keep my clients first while bringing on more sustainably.
There’s also the mental weight of the job that people don’t always see and why finding (or being) a good wedding DJ is a very challenging endeavor. Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime events. There are no do-overs. Over the years I learned how to manage not just music, but expectations, nerves, family dynamics, timelines — all while staying calm, upbeat, and present. That pressure forces you to mature quickly, and it taught me how seriously this responsibility should be taken. On the outside, I’m friendly, present, and outgoing. On the inside, I’m locked in! That’s a balance our clients really appreciate.
And then there was COVID.
When my friends would ask how long I would be a DJ, I used to joke that I’d DJ until it became illegal. When the country shut down due to a deadly pandemic, that joke basically became reality. Overnight, live events stopped. We had hundreds of weddings cancel or postpone, and there were weeks where large refund checks were going out constantly (and of course no new bookings coming in). It was both disorienting and humbling because this industry is built on people, gathering, and joy, and all of that suddenly disappeared. Would celebrations, parties, and gatherings ever come back? And if not, what did that mean for not only AMPLIFY, but for society?
When events finally began to return, I noticed something sobering: a lot of wedding vendors we worked with pre-COVID didn’t make it back. Talented people, great businesses — they went under. That moment reinforced why we had always been so focused on preparation, integrity, and long-term thinking. During this phase, we focused even more keenly on communication, flexibility, and doing right by our couples even when it was painful. And it was very often painful during that time. But at risk of cliche, it really did make AMPLIFY stronger. It made me a better business owner. And any time during peak COVID that I felt down about my business being shutdown, my mind would go to how it would feel if my loved one were dying in a hospital somewhere. Some of these were our clients who had to postpone their wedding that their grandma would no longer be able to attend.
After that challenge, AMPLIFY wasn’t just intact — it was clearer. Clearer about who we are, how we operate, and why we exist. The challenges sharpened my standards and deepened my commitment to creating meaningful, unforgettable experiences. Because you never really know when a moment might be the last — the last time you celebrate with a grandparent, the last birthday with a close friend. Or yes, even the last wedding you attend. So let’s make this wedding this weekend count! Let’s not hold back on a legendary night!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The company name choice was very intentional. We are not the reason for the celebration and not the star of the show, despite our fun, high-energy DJs. We are not creating the celebration, but doing everything we can to amplify everything that makes it special and important. Amplify the couple and their love. Amplify the smiles and dancing. Amplify the memories. That’s what we’re all about. And part of that is, of course, amplifying the music too! 😎
DJs tend to take a lot of things for granted. Too many in our industry look at their job as, “you need this and that. We do this and that. Sign below.” That mindset — coupled with tired, recycled playlists and forced cookie-cutter experiences — has plagued our industry for years, leading to “meh” or “just okay” wedding day experiences for couples who deserved better. AMPLIFY was founded from a different mindset.
Our team’s first priority is understanding that a couple shouldn’t be hiring a DJ just because “DJ” is on the checklist of people to hire. Instead, we acknowledge that each couple’s wedding is a celebration with the people they love most, and their priority is making sure they and their guests have a fun and memorable night. Otherwise, why have the celebration in the first place?
We believe that every couple has a right to a legendary night. Therefore, everything we do and how we do it is summed up within one burning ambition: the relentless pursuit of your best day ever!
The top priorities at AMPLIFY are: 1) preparation; 2) personalization; 3) FUN!
You can learn how we do that at https://amplifymyevent.com. Our services include DJing, live music, combinations of DJ + live music, lighting (including uplighting, monogram lighting, dance lighting), karaoke, trivia, photo booths, and more! We also invented Hey DJ DJ, a mobile request line for guests to connect with their DJ, who can conveniently and easily manage their requests as they come in.
We perform primarily weddings, but also quinceañeras, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, birthday parties, corporate events and holiday parties, Greek/college events, proms, and any other reason to celebrate and dance the night away!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I’ll start with least because that’s easy: I-4.
What I love most about Orlando is that it’s incredibly diverse, creative, and full of people who are here to celebrate something — whether that’s a wedding, a milestone, a vacation, or a fresh start. There’s a real sense of possibility here. You’re surrounded by people from all over the world, merging different cultures, music, and perspectives, and that shows up beautifully in the events we get to be part of. Plus, as the convention capital of the world (sorry Vegas, I stand by that), there’s a convention for every possible hobby or interest!
Orlando doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s vibrant, a little chaotic, optimistic, and constantly evolving.
