Daily Inspiration: Meet Phalair Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phalair Carter.

Hi Phalair, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My father was a rapper and I never really wanted to start rapping because I felt as though I would never fill his shoes as an MC in Chicago. However, Hip Hop was the entirety of my childhood, so the more I understood Hip Hop, the more I understood myself. My father would teach me how to rap and I began writing poetry. In high school, I started a program called beats and bars to continue expanding upon my outlet of art. The program teaches high schoolers how to produce beats and write music via the mode of poetry. As I got more serious, I would do shows with the program and around Chicago. I would eventually decide to attend Full Sail University in Orlando after high school where things become more real to me. I gained a team and have continued the elevation of my craft ever since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced while pursuing my music career is moving away from Chicago to Florida. My family is everything to me, and so is my city, and being away from those two things, who have immensely shaped who I am have been difficult. It’s also been difficult to understand my purpose as a young rapper. Many of my peers are interested in fame and money. As I have taken time to sit with myself throughout the pandemic, I have grown to understand my purpose in rap is a lot larger than I have ever thought. My career is about breaking generational curses and bringing my success and knowledge to back to the kids in my city.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper, poet, and producer from the South Side of Chicago, currently residing in Orlando. I think what sets me apart is my training in poetry, I have a different way of thinking about rap, and I’m known for the intensity and passion in my performances as well as my production style of chopping soul samples I am most proud of my tenacity, my love for my community, and the lengths I’m willing to go to fulfill my goals.

What makes you happy?
Inspiring the youth makes me happy because I was once them and I know how important it is to have folks to motivate them and spark the lights they have. Listening to/ rapping along with my father’s music makes me happy because it’s like listening to myself in a different time period, and honestly, my dad is in my top 5 my favorite MCs. Being my full self makes me happy because for a long time I wasn’t able to do that. Finally, impressing my father with my music makes me happy because he taught me everything I know, I love making him proud, it inspires me. It feels like the master recognizing the student.
