Today we’d like to introduce you to saint lumo.
Hi saint lumo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My passion for music started at a very young age when my dad taught me to play the drums when I was three years old. I played drums up until high school when I reluctantly joined the orchestra to fulfill my performing arts requirement for graduation. I originally was going to play violin because I thought it would be the easiest instrument, but the orchestra was short of upright bassists so I learned how to play that instead. Playing bass in my high school orchestra turned out to be the best decision I ever made. I went on to teach myself to play the electric bass and then taught myself to play the guitar my junior year of high school. I discovered bands like The Beatles and Nirvana that inspired me to start writing my own songs. After writing my own songs and sharing them on Instagram for a couple of years, I started my first indie solo project under the name “saint lumo” and released my first song “tell me you love me still” in July 2020. I came up with my artist name by making an anagram of Saint Louis, Missouri, which is where I was born. I watched a lot of Youtube tutorials on how to make music in Logic Pro X and taught myself how to produce and mix. My music has been immensely inspired by bands like The Beatles, Nirvana, Oasis, MGMT and artists such as Dayglow, Boy Pablo, Rex Orange County, Tame Impala and Daniel Johnston. Since starting my solo project in 2020, I have been working hard on my first EP called “my feelings 2 the world” that is being released on April 15th, 2022. All songs on “my feelings 2 the world” were written, performed, and mixed all by myself in my bedroom and I’m very excited for people to hear the new music I have been working on!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Music has been a way for me to express my feelings and navigate my own thoughts. The pandemic made it difficult for me to stay motivated writing music and stay creative. I started listening to yacht rock bands from the 70s and 80s such as Tears for Fears, The Doobie Brothers, Ambrosia and Daryl Hall & John Oates. Listening to new music inspired me to learn the piano, write new music and explore a new sound for my music inspired by these great bands.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I am most proud of is starting my solo project under the name saint lumo. I started this indie project with the goal of creating honest music that people can relate to. My upcoming EP “my feelings 2 the world” showcases the feelings of growing up and the confusion that comes with that, especially in today’s world. I think people, especially my age will be able to relate to those feelings.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
It takes time to find the right group of people to connect with and learn from, so I wouldn’t say there’s one sure answer. For a long time, it was just me writing songs by myself and for myself. It wasn’t until I started the Music Production Technology program at Daytona State College in the fall of 2020 that I was able to find like minded people and surround myself with people that are as passionate about music as I am. My professors have helped me a lot with my music and have given me a lot of confidence to pursue a career in music. I have learned a lot while in the program and I am currently in my last semester and will be graduating in May!
