Today we’d like to introduce you to Salissa Smith.
Hi Salissa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started having a dream of my logo when I was about 17 years old. I had a vision of a women’s workout clothing line with the words “just be strong”. While in college, around 2015, I printed my first set of shirts, they were more feminine and I didn’t make any sales at all. You know broke college students don’t want a shirt of an unknown brand, they want food. Forward to 2018, when I met my now fiancé, he inspired me to redesign the logo. Due to it being a unisex design, it attracted more people and has taken a new direction. My brand is for everyday people, but especially for survivors or anyone who needs the message “justbestrong”. The original color is black and white, but there are also special edition colors like pride, breast cancer pink, and autism awareness for example. My brand is for all walks of life and anyone who just want to spread a motivational word. I feature a monthly color or theme to bring awareness to the many different issues in today’s world. For example, October for breast cancer awareness, and June for pride awareness.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There is were challenges along the way. When it came to rebranding, I had a vision in my mind which was hard to explain to a designer. Once my vision came to life on paper, I felt confident in the future of my brand. Once the shirts were printed, another challenge arose getting people to actually buy the shirts.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a team lead for my current company. I’ve worked hard and started as an account service representative on the phones daily, to motivating a team of seven to succeed everyday. I transferred with my company to Atlanta, GA and set my goal to become a team lead. I worked hard to learn and new role and showed my management team that I was the one to fill that role. I accomplished this goal in two years and now I have been a team lead for about a year. I love this role of being in charge and motivating my employees to reach their goal.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love about this city is that it’s a melting pot of different cultures. People of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds lives amongst each other as one. What I least like about it is the traffic.
