Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheena Willis. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Sheena Willis

In 2022, Jessica Lovejoy, the Community Outreach Director for the Town of Oakland, contacted Sheena Willis from Orange Blossom Market Co. about their vendor market services. The partnership flourished right from the start, and following several successful events, the town welcomed the Oakland Farmers Market to take place on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays starting in September 2023.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every business faces its obstacles, and we have encountered our fair share. The main challenge has been poor weather conditions. Despite the difficulties and discouragement it can bring, we know that the sun will shine again, and we remain committed to serving the Oakland community. We recently conquered another challenge related to production. By actively listening to the residents, we discovered that the community values the products we provide and consume. Serendipitously, Sheena crossed paths with Michelle from ChellieChelle Farms, based in Ocoee, FL. She aims to cultivate and supply organic, farm-fresh produce for her community. Although she had just started her venture, they managed to exchange resources and mutually enhance both businesses.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Oakland Farmers Market stands as a vibrant testament to the community’s dedication to sustainability, quality, and mutual support. The vendors at the Oakland Farmers Market are a close-knit community of farmers, bakers, makers, artisans, and chefs who take immense pride in their work. They are not just sellers but advocates of a sustainable lifestyle, eager to share their knowledge and love for their craft with anyone who stops by. This direct line of communication between producer and consumer not only enriches the shopping experience but also fosters a sense of trust and loyalty. Shoppers can feel good about their purchases, knowing they are not only indulging in high-quality, delicious foods and unique products but are also contributing to the local economy and helping to sustain the livelihoods of their fellow community members. Beyond the tangible benefits of supporting local businesses and enjoying superior products, the Oakland Farmers Market serves as a vital social hub. It’s a place where friendships are formed, ideas are exchanged, and the fabric of the community is strengthened. Each visit is an opportunity to meet the people behind the products, learn about the processes involved in their creation, and gain a deeper appreciation for the local food system. The Oakland Farmers Market is more than just a market; it’s a celebration of community, craftsmanship, and the shared values that unite its people.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There has been a rise in the number of Farmer’s Markets everywhere. Consumers will keep educating themselves on their choices and appreciate the benefits of buying from Farmers’ Markets, leading to a higher demand for fresh produce, food, and artisanal snacks. The Oakland Farmers Market will continue to evolve alongside our community, providing the products they anticipate for years to come.
