Daily Inspiration: Meet Monica Silva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Silva.

Hi Monica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Monica Silva. My story is one like many immigrants searching for the American dream. The American dream was not one-handed to me by America. It is one made for me by my parents, through their sacrifice, pain, and struggles. I was born in Colombia but moved to the States in 1986 when I was just 6 years old. My parents brought us to America in their early thirties searching for a better life for my brother and me. As undocumented immigrants, they worked in factories and cleaning offices/daycares, often having 2-3 low-paying jobs to make ends meet. Looking back, they paved the way for us and through their experiences taught us long life lessons. Today as an adult, I acknowledge their sacrifices and thank them for making me a strong dedicated woman. I am now a professional who can provide for my son and give back to my mother as she deserves.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I recall our journey to The United States, however, as a child, I was oblivious to the early struggles my parents encountered. Being illegal, not knowing the language, and having low-paying jobs (just to name a few). Growing up, we didn’t talk about our class position, but we knew we couldn’t ask for much. There were no vacations, no traveling and the norm was going to school and working with our parents at night. This became even more important when my father passed away from a car accident. I was 11 years old. He was just 37 years old, leaving my mom to care for both my brother and me. We had to grow up fast to help her navigate this foreign country. Despite it all, my mother always talked to us about her aspirational goals for us. She taught us that working hard was the answer, and one day it would all pay off.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I currently work as a Commercial Real Estate Paralegal in a national law firm recognized among the most forward-thinking firms in the industry. I run 50+ complicated land/lot acquisition and sale contracts on a daily basis and prepare title and closing documents for a number of lot takedowns and closings for developer clients. My dedication and willingness to always help others sets me apart from others. In addition, and as my parents instilled in me, I continue to work extremely hard in everything I do and feel I am a valued member of the firm.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve always seen that people value a hard worker, your work ethic, and the dedication you put into anything you do. This life lesson has helped me in building relationships, and building relationships has opened many doors. I have always worked myself up in any job that I’ve had. I have never been ashamed or scared to start at the bottom and prove myself.  Learn from the people that are willing to teach you, and help and teach others when it’s your turn to give back.
