Today we’d like to introduce you to Theodore Everett.
Hi Theodore, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hello everyone, I’m Theodore Everett, and I’ve been working behind the chair since 2001. My original plan was to do hair on the side while I worked my way to a fashion design degree, but I fell in love with the hairstyling world completely.
I began my hairstyling journey in my home state of North Dakota, where I eventually owned and operated my salon studio, Filthy Gorgeous, for over 8 years. I later moved to Denver for a while before relocating to Orlando in 2015. Just this year, I went back to working for myself with the opening of Flthygorgus Hair. Beyond my chair, I’m humbled to have had the privilege of training and working in the editorial, runway, and educational spaces with some of the top hairstylists in the industry.
I’m very passionate about what I do because making people feel beautiful is incredibly fulfilling. Especially when someone is feeling down, I love to see them light up in the mirror after I’ve worked my magic. Hair is such a personal thing and big part of the way we show ourselves to the world, so I’m thankful that my clients trust me with that aspect of their lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My first big challenge came when I closed my first salon before moving to Colorado. Fortunately, I was able to go to work at an award-winning salon in Denver, and I really enjoyed my time there. When I decided on another move, to Florida, I had to face the challenge of starting over again and building a new client base in Orlando and the surrounding area.
I had worked at a couple salons around Orlando that weren’t a good fit. During this time, I struggled with burnout and came close to throwing in the towel. Add in the pandemic and the loss of important family members, and it was a lot to deal with.
Ultimately, my love for the industry and people won out: instead of being overwhelmed and giving up, I decided to go back into business for myself. What you focus on really impacts your attitude, so I refocused on how I use my artistic ability to help people look and feel amazing about themselves. At the end of the day, I’m thankful for the adversity because it helped me grow as a professional and as a person.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Along with cutting and styling, I specialize in modern blonding, lived-in color, and hair extension methods. Doing balayage and extensions are my favorites. I stay current with the latest techniques by taking continuing education classes, and I’m always on the lookout for inspiration. While I take great pride in being technically advanced, I also love the artistic side of what I do. I count it a blessing that I can use my creativity to help make people gorgeous. I strive to know my clients and develop a great rapport with them. People often find pictures online and don’t understand how much product, technique, and hours behind the chair those transformations might require which is why, of course, consultation and education are so important as well as getting to know the individual.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
As a child, some of my fondest memories were watching old movies with my mom—I was so captivated by the glitz and glamor of Old Hollywood. I also really enjoyed watching my two older sisters do their hair and make-up. These experiences were foundational in inspiring me to choose the career I love today.
