Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Jaimes.

Victoria Jaimes

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I am a 24-year-old barber and cosmetologist. I started in 2015 (9 years ago) to enjoy the craft and found a lot of interest in cutting hair. My mother influenced this interest, she always had a hair salon since I was 5 years old so I was always in the beauty environment. She always guided me, and I  told me I had to work for what I wanted and never give up. She had a hair salon, and I was always in an environment where she always told me I had to work for what I wanted and never give up, so that’s exactly what I did in high school. I applied for a “dual enrollment” program, which got me into a college program, and I started my career there. I graduated from high school in May 2018 and as a cosmetologist from Lake Technical College in June 2018, all in the same year. That year was overwhelming, with high school work and college assignments, but it was all worth it. As soon as I graduated, I entered the shop and began working. Since then, I’ve been striving to keep improving my skills. Later, my passion grew for barbering, so I returned to school and got my barbering license. Now I can say I’ve won awards at barber battles. I truly love the art of cutting and coloring hair; I have now been working hard to be able to work with one of my brands and show case my skills with them.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes, getting to where I am now; growing up as a female barber was tough. When someone comes into the shop, they don’t usually want a haircut from a girl, especially being so young. I’ve had to put more effort into convincing them to trust me. Every day is a struggle when getting a new client, but now, with my experience, I have people recommending me, and with social media, I’ve been able to show off my skills.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I do every haircut, style, design, beard work, and color. I’ve been trying to expand all hair textures from tight curls to the straightest hair. I specialize in designs (lines on the head). I am known for my crispy fade and design work. I am mostly proud of how far I’ve come. I proved so many wrongs that I doubted my skills and recently made my own “Design Book. What sets me apart is that I can do every haircut, whether it’s a low-fade, high-taper, or burst fade. Most barbers commonly only specialize in one or 2 things, but I am experienced enough to perform all of them at a high professional level, and I work with every hair texture. Some people need to learn how many textures there are, but being involved in the industry, you see a lot of different hair textures, which is hard for most barbers to do a perfect haircut on.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Never judge a book by its cover.
