Daily Inspiration: Meet Yessica Henao

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yessica Henao

Hi Yessica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story begins as a young child growing up in Colombia. While I have always cherished the rich culture I was raised in, there was one aspect I could never reconcile with: the killing of animals for food. Meat is a significant part of Colombian culinary culture, but I’ve always felt a profound connection, love, and respect for animals and nature. This inner conflict led me to question the animal agriculture in 2017, and I made the life-changing decision to go fully vegan to align with the values I’ve always held.

In 2009, I moved to Orlando, Florida. A decade later, recognizing the need for a strong vegan community, I co-founded the first all-vegan market in Central Florida. The Orlando Vegan Market became a hub for connection—a place where people could enjoy delicious vegan food, listen to live music, and bond with like-minded individuals. It quickly became the glue that held Orlando’s vegan community together.

Unfortunately, the market closed in 2022. However, I remained passionate about supporting vegan small businesses, especially in Orlando. Through my Instagram page, @thatveganlatinafl, I continue to promote vegan food and culture, helping to strengthen and grow the vegan community in Florida.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge the Orlando Vegan Market faced was the impact of Covid-19. In-person gatherings were limited, and even when we reopened we had to cut down on the amount of vendors due to safety concerns and regulations. It was a time of financial hardship for the community, and the people couldn’t afford spending on outside food as much as they did prior to Covid, making it hard to sustain the market.

While we had tough times, I’m proud of the community that was created, and the connections we fostered. It inspired me to continue supporting vegan businesses and promoting plant-only living through my Instagram platform, ensuring that the spirit of the community lives on.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a vegan foodie creator, I’m known for highlighting vegan cuisine, supporting small businesses, and showcasing the vibrant plant-based community in Florida, especially in Orlando. Through my Instagram page, @thatveganlatinafl, I aim to make veganism approachable, exciting, and accessible by sharing everything from healthy food, indulgent comfort food to innovative plant-based creations.

What I’m most proud of is the impact my platform has had on both the community and local businesses. I’ve helped small vegan businesses gain visibility and connect with new customers while inspiring others to explore and embrace vegan living. It’s incredibly rewarding to know my work not only supports the growth of the vegan movement but also fosters a sense of community and connection.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is staying true to my values and making a positive impact on the world, especially when it comes to animals, the environment, and supporting small businesses. I’ve always believed that living in alignment with your beliefs is key to happiness and fulfillment. For me, being vegan is about respecting all living beings and promoting a healthier, more sustainable way of life.

I’m also deeply passionate about helping others—whether it’s by supporting local businesses or inspiring people to explore plant-based living. Knowing that my actions can help create a more compassionate and sustainable world is what drives me every day.
