Daily Inspiration: Meet Yida Catala

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yida Catala.

Yida Catala

Hi, Yida; having you on the platform is an honor. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I have been passionate about baking for a long time, but my true journey began about 8 years ago when I had a dream of creating edible flowers. I started jotting down ideas and making numerous mistakes but never gave up on practicing. My journey started in North Carolina, and then I had to relocate to Florida, where I had to rebuild my business from scratch. I take pride in being the sole practitioner of my craft in my area, and I find immense joy in hearing from my customers and brightening their day with my creations.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been challenging, primarily because I work full-time as a middle school teacher. Balancing my passion for baking with my professional commitments has been a challenge. There have been times when I had to turn down orders due to time constraints. Moreover, being a homemaker in Florida comes with its own rules and regulations, which have posed additional challenges.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Floral Cupcakes and making them into bouquets. I’ve been fortunate enough to be part of many celebrations, including baby showers and weddings. I’ve also been working on Floral Sugar Cookies lately, but my passion is cupcakes.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would suggest exploring various learning avenues for those seeking to network or find a mentor. I have found great value in watching online videos and investing in paid tutorials. Additionally, I have joined numerous baking blogs and networking events, both locally and internationally. However, the most meaningful connections often come through ‘word of mouth’ referrals from satisfied customers.

Pricing:

  • Cupcake Florals range from $3.50 – $7, depending on the complexity
  • Bouquets range from $52 to $77, but I’m adding larger ones soon.
