Today we’d like to introduce you to Zey Chalz.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started producing, writing, and engineering seriously when I was 15. The year I turned 16, My mom, younger siblings, and I moved to Northern Virginia where I eventually met and began to build with my business partner Matthew James Spencer who is currently an AnR and Executive Producer helping to build our label Thri ltd. by scouting talent and building important relationships in Florida. We are currently based in Atlanta, GA, Orlando, FL, Cleveland, OH, and Los Angeles, CA. So far we have over 15 in-house songwriters, producers, and engineers and are actively scouting talent to mold and help perform at the highest levels in music. We help our artists book both major and minor events nationwide, market themselves properly, and find the right people to work with in order to build the sufficient fan base necessary for an artist to profit and ultimately help them break into the mainstream, or whatever market our artists desire to thrive in.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. If you speak with any successful business owner, they will tell you how many failures and long grueling hours, days, months, and even years that it took them just to get a glimpse of real equitable possibilities, just to still be more than likely disappointed. That’s why it’s important to focus on clear direction and appreciate the struggle. Struggle can be anything from going days without food to being homeless or even losing loved ones, just to name a few, and those are just some of my struggles. The best part about struggles is they teach you how to adapt. Struggles teach you how to think outside of the norms of society. There are definitely levels in this life, and how far you fall measures how far you can climb.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
People know me as courageous artist. Whether it be producing instrumentals for days straight, rerecording vocals repeatedly until perfect then chopping them into pieces with a crazy mix, laying out a full gallery of my paintings and studio art for viewers, doing tattoos for clients, or modeling our designer fashion brand, Nvsty. People often tell me that beautiful art is what I do, and I will work excruciatingly hard to do it because it’s what I love. I want to work so hard that there’s no possible way anyone can best me, and I aim to push my teammates to do the same.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If you’re afraid to take risks, you will spend your life living in fear. If you live in fear, you may never reach your full potential. I’ve taken so many insane risks that I should be dead, but somehow I’m still breathing. Taking risks taught me that not only could I do anything, but that I could also do things a lot of people are too afraid to do. Everyone told me that I was crazy to break my lease, sell most of my stuff, and drive cross country for three days from Virginia to California with only a few hundred bucks in my pocket. Everyone I loved said I would fail, but if I had not gone I wouldn’t have met half of Cleveland’s music industry. I built relationships with King Chip(Tha Ripper), Yung Yonni, JPDidThisOne(a.k.a. Earl St. Claire), and Big Duke plus so many others. If I was afraid to take risks, I wouldn’t have caught a last minute Grey Hound bus with my last $80 from Cleveland to Atlanta to work with Bizzare from D12 and build a relationship with him. Taking great risks are not for the weak of heart, but they can be life-changing. The most important thing I learned about risks is that not every risk is worth taking. Having stability in life is more important than being all over the place with no clear direction, but never live life in fear.
