Daily Inspiration: Meet Zi Moreira

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zi Moreira.

Zi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in Brazil, I have always been captivated by the power of artistic expression. As a child, I sketched on anything I could find—scraps of paper, the margins of my school books—never imagining that art would one day become my life’s work.
Years after taking my first painting class, I established my own studio in Brazil, where I began sharing my distinctive approach with others. While acrylic is my primary medium, I also explore oil and mixed media. Early in my artistic path, I was honored with “The People’s Choice Award” at a public exhibition in Brazil. This moment deepened my connection to the art community and reaffirmed my artistic journey.
In 2010, I embarked on a new chapter: moving to the United States with my husband, two sons, and two dogs. A year later, I held my first U.S. exhibition, “Os Anjos Em Minha Vida” (The Angels in My Life), a deeply personal collection reflecting my artistic and spiritual inspirations.
Over time, my creative path evolved, leading me to focus on abstract fine art and mixed media. I drew profound inspiration from the ethereal realm, channeling its energy into each piece I created. Though I exist in the physical world, my art serves as a bridge to the unseen, an exploration of the sensations, emotions, and mysteries that unfold during the act of painting.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey hasn’t always been smooth. But the challenges have shaped my path in profound ways. My parents, despite their hardships and lack of formal education, instilled in me the value of learning and the importance of perseverance. My father, a dreamer like myself, was not able to read, but his unwavering support and encouragement were instrumental in pushing me toward a better future.
One of the biggest obstacles I faced was adapting to a new language after moving to the U.S. Rather than letting this challenge hold me back, I embraced it as an opportunity for growth. Determined to broaden my knowledge and push my limits, I returned to college and pursued a degree in Fine Art and Design. That decision not only strengthened my skills but also reaffirmed my commitment to creating a life driven by passion and ambition.
Growing up in a small city lacking cultural institutions such as museums and galleries, I found myself in an environment where artistic pursuits were neither valued nor encouraged. The people around me had little interest in or exposure to art, and there were no tangible references or cultural influences to draw upon.
My perspective changed when I took my first art class in high school. It was a transformative experience that opened my eyes to the power of creativity and self-expression. Despite the limitations of my surroundings, I discovered that art could transcend boundaries and ignite a fire within me.
This newfound exposure to art in a formal setting challenged my preconceived notions and made me realize that my passion for artistic expression was valid and worth pursuing. I began to seek out alternative sources of inspiration and education, exploring different art forms, artists, and art movements beyond the confines of my immediate environment.
The experience taught me the importance of believing in myself, resilience, and the willingness to pursue my passion even in the absence of immediate external validation or encouragement. It reinforced the idea that true artistic expression knows no boundaries and can thrive even in the most challenging of circumstances.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My primary medium is oil and cold wax. I also explore acrylic and mixed media, constantly pushing the boundaries of my creativity.
My vision is to create works that call for the participation of the viewer, to become involved with the art. My goal is to draw the audience into the art as ideas are expressed using different mediums, along with exploring texture, color, lines, and movement. My art is for anyone who believes in the transformation of the human being, the evolution of the human mind. I wish to reflect depth and extreme intensity through the world of color.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
My artistic journey has been shaped by challenges, discoveries, and an endless pursuit of authentic expression. Amidst the demands of daily life, I found moments to study, experiment, and understand the essence of my craft.
Over time, my style began to evolve. Initially, I was focused on realism. After talking to other artists about abstract art, my interest in it grew, so I decided to challenge myself. Gradually, I introduced abstract elements into my work, adding layers of depth and creative freedom. This fusion eventually transformed into a fully abstract approach, becoming my signature style, one that intrigued and resonated with fellow artists.
As my artistic identity grew, I felt compelled to share my knowledge, offering advice, guidance, and teaching others who sought art as a hobby or even as therapy. My passion for teaching led me to establish my own studio—a space where art was not just displayed but lived, discussed, and transformed through lessons and exchanges. In this environment, I believe I learned just as much as I taught. My journey took a new direction when my husband received a job offer, prompting our family to relocate to Michigan, USA. The region’s cold, harsh weather contrasted with its breathtaking landscapes, which had a profound impact on me. The area’s cultural diversity and thriving artistic community opened new doors, allowing me to continue learning, evolving, and expanding my creative vision.
Engaging in study groups and workshops with other artists further enriched my artistic perspective, challenging me to explore new paths. Every experience, conversation, and technique deepened my artistic identity, making my work a reflection of the journey I had undertaken.
My experiences have been fundamental in shaping my artistic style. Every museum, gallery, and exhibition I visited expanded my understanding of composition, color, and technique. Conversations with fellow artists pushed me to think differently, experiment with new approaches, and view art as an ongoing dialogue.
Exhibiting my work across the United States, Brazil, and Europe demonstrated how art connects with diverse audiences, influencing the way I express myself. Traveling the world exposed me to new cultures, materials, and techniques, enriching my repertoire and inspiring a fusion of styles.
Every challenge, discovery, and creative exchange has shaped my work, making my style truly unique. Today, I am fortunate to see my art recognized, with pieces spread across Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Brazil, and several states in the U.S. It is incredibly fulfilling to know that my art has resonated with so many people, both within and beyond the artistic community, and that my expression has found appreciation across different cultures. This recognition is the fulfillment of a journey marked by dedication, passion, and continuous growth.
