Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Noble. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Introducing Smart Fitness, a company with BIG goals! Smart Fitness was founded by Andrew and Stacey Noble in 2015. It all started in 2007 working in a big box gym. After a few short years, they knew there was a better way. All too often people joined the gym committing to 4-5x per week programs only to fall short of their unrealistic goals and quit. Why did they quit? Because they were set up with goals that hardly anyone can maintain. Those people would walk away from the big gym feeling like they failed and we would never hear from them again. Nothing against Big Box Gyms but they are notorious for poor retention rates and usage. We would have weekly meetings and this was ALWAYS the topic of discussion. This inspired Andrew and he was poised to create a better solution.
The passion for helping people get healthier runs very deep for Andrew. He was raised by two wonderful, loving parents that also happened to be obese. Andrew was always an athlete, but at 19 he realized that if he didn’t change his mindset about food and exercise, he could easily continue down the same path. Unfortunately, his father ultimately died at 56 due to an obesity-related illness. Andrew chose a career in fitness to help himself and to help others battle this disease. It motivates him to keep pushing his skills and reaching as many people as possible. He wholeheartedly believes there is a viable solution to this rising problem and is mission-driven to solve it!
Stacey worked for 20 years in a corporate setting, working in Human Resources. When she wasn’t working, she was focusing on transitioning her own relationship with food as it wasn’t always the best. Elimination and crash dieting is what she grew up believing was the best way to drop weight. She realized in her early 20s after a scare with IBS that proper nutrition was more important than any quick fix to lose weight. As she continued to work on her own fitness and nutrition she saw the need for wellness and health education with her employees. Being in Human Resources gave her the ability to organize biometric screenings, wellness programs and educate her employees about nutrition. When Smart Fitness opened, she knew her role would be educating the clients about the importance of nutrition in addition to exercise.
Things really started to take off In 2011, when Andrew partnered with a doctor. He started running a 20 minute, twice a week franchised fitness business. Initially, he was skeptical about the 180 degrees flip from traditional gym structure but dove in head first learning everything about the business. He continued growing his skillset, his client base and learning more behavioral-change methods. This experience led him to a much more successful way of training. Overwhelmingly, realistic goal setting and positive coaching was the key to success. Shame and impossible cliche challenges or crash diets weren’t helping people. He found that clients were loyal to his style of training and retention was high.
Over the next 12 years, the Smart Fitness Training model has followed science and adapted to the needs of our clients. It has been proven safe and effective with over 500 people passing through our system injury-free. Our training philosophy continually developed into what it is today. We structure our programs using a 3 Phase Approach. Phase 1: Stability, Mobility and Balance; Phase 2: Strength and Movement and Phase 3: Power, Speed and agility. This is all complemented by an appropriate cardiovascular base. The cardiovascular base is built through walking, running, cycling, swimming or other movement-based forms of exercise. An appropriate cardiovascular base helps clients recover more efficiently. This model encourages people to follow the US Dept. of Health and Human Services 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines encourage strengthening exercises 2x per week plus 150 minutes of weekly purposeful movement.
Andrew is the co-founder and Head Coach and Stacey is the co-founder and our Nutrition Coach since 2015. Abel has been our Strength Coach since 2019, he brings a plethora of technical training knowledge. In 2020, we added a recovery room and now include licensed massage therapy and therapeutic bodywork. Our recovery specialist Josie brings 20 years of massage experience. And we are growing! We are adding another Strength Coach in December 2021 and in 2022, the sky’s the limit.
Aside from providing world-class results through our science-based system, we also aim to create a world-class organization. We consider our employee’s family and make sure their needs are met ahead of our own. Our goal for our staff is to provide a fun, balanced and rewarding career experience where relationships are built to last.
Our mission at Smart Fitness is to remove one of the most common barriers to health, time restriction. With evidence-based methods, our programs seek to improve quality of life through behavior change. The culture at Smart Fitness is to elevate others, provide support and build healthier mindsets. Together, we will shift societies’ focus towards a healthier future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting people to shift their mindsets away from a typical heavily marketed vanity-focused fitness world. Initially, just like I was, people are skeptical as they have been sold all kinds of gimmicky products/programs.
We were also closed for eight weeks through the initial Covid lockdown. Our entire business trajectory was in balance and we were very uncertain of the future. With a bit of ingenuity pivoting to online video sessions, giving people free training programs through a specialized portal, we rose above the closure. In fact, it strengthened our client loyalty and we are now on a better path than before.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Smart Fitness?
We specialize in a 20 minute twice a week program that aims to reduce barriers to exercise. We encourage all to use our time-sensitive program as a kickoff point for their life-long health journey. Beyond standard fitness and strength coaching, we have developed medical exercise programs for those with total joint replacements, spine injuries, high blood pressure, diabetes and other related conditions. These specialized programs set us apart from the competition and we are well known for being a vital part of a client’s healthcare team. Our constant contact with their medical providers, physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, etc. allows up to provide the highest quality of care and safest programs possible. Our studio demographics are primarily 40+ with many first-time exercisers starting as late at 75 years old! Our program scales with the athletes as they get better. We can add on time to expand their program offering 40-60min sessions when appropriate.
